HANOVER, N.H. – Behind its best all around performance of the season, the Dartmouth women's basketball team won its first game of the season by taking down Boston University, 72-52, on Saturday at Leede Arena.
The victory improves the Big Green to 1-4 on the season, while the Terriers drop to 0-5.
Three Dartmouth players finished the game in double digits in points, as the Green shot 41 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range. Senior, Lakin Roland led her team with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Kate Letkewicz was on fire from behind the arc making four of seven shots.
“We practiced way better this last week and that's where it begins,” said Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes. “We had four really strong days to learn all the lessons from our Texas trip and our WNIT experience. We were able to take those lessons from film and those conversations and bring it to our practice to prepare for BU. You saw a lot of those things today, you saw better shot selection, more disciplined defense and you saw us getting to the free throw line a little bit more.”
Boston University opened the game on a 4-0 run, but Dartmouth would quickly take control of the quarter and the half. Letkewicz opened the floodgates with her first three-pointer of the afternoon, which sparked a 9-0 run for the Big Green. By the end of the first quarter, Dartmouth found itself up 29-10, which is the most points the Green have put up in the first this season.
Dartmouth picked up where it left off in the second quarter of play extending its lead to 18 points at the 6:51 mark. The Terriers tried to fight back closing the lead to 15 at the U-5 media timeout, but the Big Green defense tightened up. Dartmouth went on a 6-0 run before the buzzer to take a commanding 43-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the third, the Big Green kept the pressure on BU as jumpers by Roland and Olivia Smith extended to the lead to 52-30 at the five-minute mark of the third quarter.
In the fourth, the Terriers did everything they could to close the gap, unleashing a 10-0 run in the first few minutes of the final stanza. A couple of free throws by senior Daisy Jordan at the six-minute mark ended any chance for a BU comeback. Amber Mixon added a trey in the game's closing minutes en route to Dartmouth's first victory of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Big Green will look to notch their second win on Tuesday when Dartmouth travels to Rochester, Michigan to take on Oakland University. Tip off for that contest will be at 7 p.m.
