ROCHESTER, Mich. – After a strong first quarter performance, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Oakland, 78-60, in Rochester, Michigan.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-5 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 4-2.
Despite having four players reach double digits in points, Dartmouth could not overcome the strong offensive performance from Oakland's Olivia Nash as she led her team with 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Big Green's leading scorer was Kate Letkewicz with 16 points after she went 7 for 18 from the field.
“As a team collectively we need to start translating the lessons were learning from these games,” Dartmouth head coach Belle Koclanes said. “We're working on scoring and we're working on attack drills leading into Oakland, the plan was in place and the preparation was strong. Our players need to execute. When it's game time, this group has to learn how to translate the lessons that we're working on and put it into action with a really competitive attitude.”
Oakland started the game on a 4-0 run, however three-pointers by Lakin Roland and Fanni Szabo gave the Big Green an early 6-4 lead at the first media timeout. At the end of the first quarter, a layup by Letkewicz gave Dartmouth an 11-7 lead. The Big Green came out shooting the ball well in the second, quickly extending their lead to 15-7.
With 8:02 remaining in the half, a three by Emily Slagle gave Dartmouth an 18-9 advantage. The Big Green's largest lead of the first half was 11 points, but the Golden Grizzlies would not go away. After hitting a couple of trey's Oakland found itself down two. Just before halftime time, the Golden Grizzlies took a 31-28 lead after scoring twice with just a minute left in the half.
In the third quarter, Dartmouth's defense tried to keep the pressure on Oakland, but a 6-0 run followed by an 8-0 run gave the Golden Grizzlies a 47-32 lead at the under-five media timeout. By the quarter's end, the Big Green found themselves down 60-41 after Letkewicz drained a three at the buzzer.
Dartmouth did not give up in the final stanza as the Big Green mounted a late comeback. Shooting the ball well, Dartmouth went on a 7-0 run after a trey by Szabo and a layup by Letkewicz to close Oakland's lead to 13 points, but the Big Green could not complete the late rally.
“We got the stops, but we did not get the rebounds,” Koclanes said. “There was a stretch there where we gave up two or three offensive boards in a row in the fourth.”
Dartmouth will get a chance to right the ship with a three-game homestand at Leede Arena. On Friday, the Big Green play host to Rhode Island followed by contests against Maine on Sunday and Vermont on Dec. 9.
