HANOVER, N.H. – After keeping the score close for the majority of the contest, the Dartmouth women's basketball team eventually fell to Rhode Island, 57-41, on Friday at Leede Arena.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-6 on the season, while the Rams improve to 3-4.
For the first time this season, two Dartmouth players recorded double-doubles as senior Lakin Roland scored a team high 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while sophomore Kate Letkewicz scored 11 points and led the team with 12 boards. Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes has been impressed with the leadership Letkewicz has shown in just her second year in Hanover.
“Kate Letkewicz is the one that is emerging and she needs to continue to emerge and not just by the way she's playing. It's also vocally and the team needs to start following Kate's lead. If I was a player on this team, I would grab hold of Kate Letkewicz right now.”
For Dartmouth is was another strong first quarter of play as the Big Green outscored Rhode Island 12-9. Sophomore Emily Slagle got Dartmouth on the board early with a layup and three-pointer. A Letkewicz trey gave the Green a 10-6 lead at the under-five media timeout.
After an Andi Norman three to begin the second quarter, neither team could find a solid footing on offense. The Rams eventually tied the game after two free throws halfway through the quarter. The Big Green retook the lead after another Norman trey at the 3:30 mark, but Rhode Island remained resilient, taking a 24-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Rams picked up where they left off in the third taking a 33-24 lead at the six-minute mark. Letkewicz stayed hot behind the arc, adding a three to bring the Green within eight at the under-five media timeout. She finished the night three for eight from three-point range. After a couple of Roland free throws, Dartmouth found itself within five points of the lead.
“We wanted to get more post touches inside,” Koclanes said. “Our posts got their shots blocked early and they kind of went away from it. In the second half we saw spurts from Lakin and Daisy trying to get after it again, but we need more balanced scoring.”
Rhode Island countered with two three-pointers with one minute left in the quarter to begin an 8-0 run that spanned four minutes. The Big Green stayed tough in the fourth cutting the Ram's lead to nine points after two Roland free throws. The Rams defense held as Charise Wilson added a three for good measure en route to the victory. She ended her night with a team high 19 points.
Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Big Green host Maine at Leede Arena at 2 p.m. Following that contest, the Big Green will welcome Vermont to Hanover on Wed. Dec. 9 at noon.
