HANOVER, N.H. – After a resilient third quarter, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to Maine, 59-41, at Leede Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-7, while Maine improves to 7-4.
Despite the loss, it was a huge day on the court for Dartmouth senior, Lakin Roland as she finished the afternoon with team high 19 points and nine rebounds.
“Lakin is an excellent player,” said Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes. “She is capable of that and more every night. We want her to perform like that all the time because she is so capable of it all the time.”
In what was a low scoring first half for both teams, Maine struck first with a 6-0 run that spanned the game's opening four minutes. The Black Bears run was eventually broken up by a Roland free throw. At the end of the quarter, Maine held a 9-3 advantage. It was only the second time this season that the Big Green did not outscore their opponents in the opening quarter.
Senior Daisy Jordan brought Dartmouth within four points of the Black Bears' lead after draining a couple of free throws at the beginning of the second stanza. As a team, the Big Green went six for nine from the charity stripe. With 6:55 left before halftime, Maine's offense began to click, completing a three-point play after a foul by sophomore Olivia Smith. The Black Bears would go on to complete a 9-0 run that was eventually broken up by a Fanni Szabo trey.
With Maine up 19-8, freshman Isalys Quinones scored her first points of the season by playing tough under the basket to sink a layup. The Black Bears continued to shoot well through the remainder of the first half to take a 26-12 lead into the locker room at the half.
Roland scored four points on the Green's opening two possessions of the second half to begin a huge quarter for the 6' forward. Later in the third, Jordan drove hard through the lane before being fouled to complete the three-point play. Minutes later, a jumper by Szabo and three by sophomore Kate Letkewicz cut Maine's lead to 35-25 with 4:20 left in the third.
The Big Green played tough on defense closing the Black Bear's lead to seven points. Roland ended the quarter the way she started it, by scoring twice, first with a layup and then again with a three-pointer to bring Dartmouth within two to start the fourth quarter.
Koclanes said guard Amber Mixon was key to her team's defensive effort throughout most the game.
“Without Amber Mixon, we are a very different basketball team,” Koclanes said. “Her defensive intensity and her fight day in and day out, that's part of the reason we are able to defend some of these teams the way that we do.”
The final stanza did not go the way the Green had hoped for after Maine hit consecutive three's to go up 46-37 with 4:32 left to play. The Black Bears extended their lead to double digits in the game's closing minutes dashing the hopes of a late Dartmouth comeback.
The Big Green conclude their three-game homestand on Wednesday when Dartmouth welcomes Vermont to Leede Arena for a noon tipoff.
