HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Vermont, 56-54, in front of a packed Leede Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-8, while the Catamounts improve to 3-6.
With the score tied at 54, Vermont's Courtney White hit the game winning layup with just 10 seconds remaining in the game. After a missed three-pointer by Dartmouth senior Lakin Roland, sophomore Amber Mixon put up a last second shot, but could not get it off before the clock hit zero.
“We had a pretty good first half,” Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes said. “I felt good about our execution. I was looking forward to being able to gain some confidence today. We felt really good about our matchup with Vermont and we were looking for a turning point in our season. Credit to Vermont, they came out in that second half and they were scrappy and they came at us.”
Junior Fanni Szabo had her first breakout game of the season for Dartmouth. The 6'1” guard led the team with 19 points, shooting 8 for 23 from the field. Sophomore Kate Letkewicz also had a good game for the Big Green, with 12 points and nine rebounds.
“If there is a major positive from today its that Fanni has that look in her eye again,” Koclanes said. “I recognize her again which is awesome and she is really focused.”
In a back and forth first half that saw seven ties and six lead changes, senior Daisy Jordan struck first for the Big Green with an excellent putback under the rim. By the first media timeout, the Catamounts had an 8-6 lead. Dartmouth battled back when Letkewicz tied the game at 11 on a three-point play after being fouled. A Roland layup gave the Green a 13-11 advantage at the end of the first.
Vermont retook the lead in the opening minutes of the second, but after field goals by Jordan and Szabo, Dartmouth went back up 17-15. By the under-five media timeout, the Green stretched their lead to 22-17, before taking a 29-21 lead into the locker room at the half.
Dartmouth continued to shoot the ball well, taking a 41-31 lead after a steal by Mixon and quick layup by Roland halfway through the third quarter. The Big Green led by 12 at the 3:41 mark of the third, but the Catamounts were not finished completing an 8-0 run and draining a buzzer beater to close Dartmouth's lead to four by quarters end.
Vermont cut the Big Green's lead to one to open the final quarter, before tying the game at 47 with only six minutes to play. A trey by Szabo gave Dartmouth the 54-52 lead with just 1:37 left in the game, but it would not be enough when the final horn sounded.
The Big Green return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when Dartmouth hits the road to take on Hartford. Following that game, the Big Green travel to Kentucky to face Louisville on Dec. 15.
