HARTFORD, Conn. – Behind a solid second half effort, the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Hartford 43-36 at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Conn.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 2-8, while the loss drops Hartford to 4-5.
Dartmouth's two seniors led the team is scoring, as Lakin Roland scored 14 points while Daisy Jordan scored 12, including key free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Big Green.
“I'm proud of our team's effort today,” said Dartmouth head coach Belle Koclanes. “We were very focused all through out and we kept taking about one possession at a time.”
Roland got the Big Green on the scoreboard on the team's first possession with a jumper in what would be a back-and-forth first half. With the score tied 9-9 at the first media timeout, the teams traded three-pointers before Hartford took a slim 14-13 lead by the quarters end.
The second stanza would prove to be a sluggish one for both squads, as not a single basket was scored until the 4:26 mark of the quarter when the Hawks hit two free throws. Dartmouth jumped out to an 18-17, lead after a three-pointer by sophomore Kate Letkewicz and free throws by sophomore Emily Slagle. A long Fanni Szabo jump shot just shy of the arc extended the Big Green's advantage, giving Dartmouth a 22-20 lead at the half.
The Green came out shooting well in the third, dictating play for most of the quarter. A Jordan layup and Szabo trey sparked what would be a 9-0, run for Dartmouth giving the Big Green a 31-22 lead.
Hartford would not go away in the fourth quarter cutting Dartmouth's lead to 31-29 with just 8:41 left in the game. A field goal by Jordan and three-pointer by Roland gave the Big Green some breathing room and a 36-29 lead.
Dartmouth kept the pressure on the Hawks late going on a 5-0 run that stretched until the game's final three minutes. The Green would have to play on without their leading point scorer Roland after she fouled out of the game. Hartford made one last run at Dartmouth's lead with a three pointer to cut the Big Green's advantage to 38-34.
In the game's final minutes, key free throws by Szabo and Jordan sealed Dartmouth's second victory of the season.
“They were very attentive in the huddles, its crunch time at that point,” Koclanes said. “Everything is magnified in the last two minutes of the game. It's fun from a coaching standpoint, especially with the new rules. I'm very proud of the way they went out and executed what they needed to do. They secured the basketball late and knocked down free throws when we needed them to.”
The Big Green travel to Louisville on Tuesday for a 7 p.m tip off with the Cardinals at the KFC Yum Center.
