LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite playing Louisville tough in first half, the Dartmouth women's basketball team could not overcome a strong Cardinals offense, as the Big Green fell 94-52, before nearly 8,000 fans at the KFC Yum! Center.
With the loss, Dartmouth drops to 2-9, while Louisville improves to 5-5.
Junior Fanni Szabo led the Big Green in scoring with 14 points, while senior Lakin Roland, who was playing in front of her hometown crowd, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored 11 points. As a team, Dartmouth shot 39 percent from the field and went 12 for 20 from the charity stripe. The Cardinals offense was led by four players who ended the night in double figures. Briahanna Jackson and Sam Fuehring each scored a team-high 14 points.
“We're still working with this team and building with this team to figure out what works best with this group, Big Green head coach Belle Koclanes said. “So we have been spending a lot of time on offensive breakdowns and you saw great execution and high percentage shots against Louisville's man-to-man defense.”
Louisville jumped out to an early 8-2 lead to open the first quarter of play. A Roland three cut the Cards lead to five points at the first media timeout of the half. The Big Green defense played tough during the opening stanza as Louisville led 15-7 by the quarters end. Roland got things going for Dartmouth with a jumper to start the second. After Szabo drained one of two free throws the Green trailed by just five points.
While the Cardinals tried to get separation, Dartmouth would not give in. Sophomore Amber Mixon drained an important three halfway through the quarter to keep the Big Green in the game. With 4:25 remaining in the first half, it was Mixon again who came up big for Dartmouth hitting another key shot from behind the arc.
“Amber Mixon is becoming an excellent point guard,” Koclanes said. “She is becoming the point guard we need her to be and she is communicating more effectively. She can handle any pressure and she can pressure any level and she continues to prove that against any of our opponents. Amber gives their guards a hard time defensively and now she's doing it offensively.”
In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Louisville's offense began to heat up as the Cardinals went on a 12-0 run which was broken up by a Roland jumper at the 2:16 mark. At the half, the Big Green found themselves trailing 39-23, however in the second quarter Dartmouth shot 60 percent from the field compared to Louisville's 45 percent.
In the third, sophomore Kate Letkewicz opened the quarter with a three on Dartmouth's first possession. However the Cardinals offense began to roll taking a 61-32, advantage by the 2:30 mark. Toward the end of the quarter, freshman Emily Dryden drained two foul shots and scored a layup before the buzzer. She finished the game with six points and four rebounds. At the end of three quarters Louisville took a 62-36 lead into the final stanza.
The Cardinals continued to add to their lead in the fourth, but the Big Green kept fighting until the final horn. Toward the under-five media timeout, Szabo scored on back-to-back Dartmouth possessions, hitting a jumper before draining a three.
The Big Green return to Leede Arena for games against American and Niagara on Thursday and Friday. Tip off for both contests is at 7 p.m.
