All-Time Series: Blackbirds lead 2-0
Last Meeting: Dec. 28, 1968 — LIU Brooklyn 62, Dartmouth 44
Home Opener
• Dartmouth, in search of its first win of the 2015-16 campaign, hosts LIU Brooklyn in the Big Green's home opener.
• The Green have won their last three home openers — defeating Lyndon State in 2012, Maine the following season and IPFW last year on a three-pointer at the buzzer — improving to 15-13 in home openers since Leede Arena opened in 1987.
• The last time Dartmouth played was 12 days ago before the start of the fall term exams in a 73-63 road loss at Marist.
• Freshman Evan Boudreaux has impressed in the first two games, setting a Dartmouth freshman record for scoring in the season opener with 25 points at Seton Hall followed by a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) against the Red Foxes.
• Foul trouble plagued the Big Green at Marist as three players fouled out, including Connor Boehm with nearly eight minutes left to play.
• Captain Tommy Carpenter recorded his first double-digit scoring game of the season (but fifth in his last 11 contests dating back to last year) with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
• Taking over the starting point guard position this year has been senior Malik Gill, who has 13 assists and seven steals in the only two games to date.
• Shooting accuracy has been a problem as Dartmouth is hitting just 36 percent of its field goal attempts and a mere 24.3 percent from distance.
Series vs. LIU Brooklyn
• This is the first time in 47 years these teams play each other. The Blackbirds won the only two other meetings — 90-55 on Dec. 30, 1965 and 62-44 on Dec. 28, 1968.
• Both of the previous matchups came as a part of a pair of holiday tournaments; the Albright Invitational and The Queen City Tournament.
• Dartmouth is 9-11 all-time against current Northeast Conference schools.
• The only other game against an NEC school on the Big Green schedule is on New Year's Eve against Bryant in Hanover.
• This is the first time head coach Paul Cormier goes up against LIU Brooklyn in his career.
Scouting the Blackbirds
• After winning its first three games by a combined nine points, LIU Brooklyn suffered its first defeat at FIU, 80-72.
• The Blackbirds finished fourth in the NEC preseason poll after going 12-18 last year and 8-10 in conference play.
• LIU Brooklyn, which is shooting 40.6 percent as a team and 21.5 percent from long distance, has relied on solid foul shooting (73.7 percent) and forced turnovers (16.3 per game) to produce three wins in its first four games.
• Jerome Frink, a transfer from FIU, is averaging close to a double-double, leading the team at 17.8 points and 9.5 rebounds.
• Not far behind in the scoring ledger is Martin Hermannsson at 17.3 points per game.
• Two other produce double figures nightly — point guard Aakim Saintil (13.8) and wing Joel Hernandez (11.3).
• The four players mentioned above have scored 240 of the Blackbirds' 305 points (78.6 percent).
• In his fourth season as LIU Brooklyn's head coach is Jack Perri (Bentley '98) after serving seven seasons as an assistant for the program. He led the Blackbirds to a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season at the helm and sports a 44-53 record with them and a 64-62 record as a head coach overall.
Burnham Debuts on ILDN
In the third season of the Ivy League Digital Network, Dartmouth will have a new voice calling the action in Jay Burnham. A veteran minor league baseball broadcaster who was named the 2011 Minor League Broadcaster of the Year, Burnham is a New England native who attended Elon University in North Carolina. Dartmouth fans will hear his voice on all home broadcasts streamed live on Big Green Insider through the ILDN.
Hot Shots Part Boudreaux
After scoring 25 points in his collegiate debut at Seton Hall, (the most by any Big Green freshman in a season opener ever), Evan Boudreaux provided an encore of sorts with his 16 points and 12 rebounds at Marist for his first career double-double. The rookie currently leads the Ivy League in scoring at 20.5 points per game while ranking fourth in rebounding (9.0 rpg).
Dropping a Quarter
Dimes are for point guards, such as Malik Gill who leads the Ivy League with 6.5 assists per game. But quarters are for scorers as Evan Boudreaux torched Seton Hall for 25 points, the most by a freshman in any game since Alex Mitola dropped 27 against Yale in his rookie campaign in the 2012-13 season. Over the last 40 season opener, the most points by any Dartmouth player is 35 — Jim Barton against Hartford in 1986-87 and Sea Lonergan versus Colgate in 1996-97.
Recalibrating the Sights
Dartmouth has struggled shooting the ball early in the season, failing to hit even 40 percent in either of its first two games. Last time out at Marist, the Big Green knocked down just 21-of-62 (.339), including 15 straight misses to end the first half. Only once last year did Dartmouth hit a lower percentage, that coming in a 57-46 loss to Harvard at 33.3 percent (16-of-48). Two weeks later, the Green knocked off the eventual league champion.
Whistle While You Work
The Dartmouth defense struggled a bit against Seton Hall in the season opener as the Pirates shot 61.7 percent from the floor. As it turned out, the Big Green's best defense came by fouling the Big East school — 32 times to be exact — as the Pirates barely converted half of their 43 foul shots (22). The only other time in the last 10 years Dartmouth fouled a team as much was against Providence (33) nearly seven years prior to the day, Nov. 18, 2008.
Next time out at Marist, three Big Green players (Connor Boehm, Kevin Crescenzi, Malik Gill) all fouled out, the first time that has happened to Dartmouth since an overtime loss at Harvard on Jan. 26, 2013.
