HANOVER, N.H. - For senior forward Lucielle Kozlov, senior day was extra special as she recorded the game winning goal as the Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Cornell, 1-0, on Saturday at Burnham Field.
In the first half, Dartmouth dictated play, out shooting the Big Red 9-2, but the Green could not find the back of the net. Dartmouth keep Cornell goalkeeper, Kelsey Tierney on her toes forcing her to make four saves in the first half alone. She finished the day with seven.
“I'm really proud of the team and how hard they worked,” said Big Green head coach Ron Rainey. “Again the game was not unlike some other games that we've played this year. What was great was that we were able to get the first goal. Then we did what we needed defensively to not allow a lot of chances. But I'm really proud of the effort and really proud of the team for working hard these last couple weeks of practice.”
After a scoreless first half, the Big Green picked up where they left off as Dartmouth kept the action on the Big Red side of the pitch to begin the second stanza of the game. About 16 minutes in, Kozlov netted her 11th goal of the season when freshman Lauren Lucas hit Kozlov with a pass from the middle of the box.
“Lucielle had a great season and that goal was similar to ones that she scored through the year,” said Rainey. “She had a nice run and sealed off her player. That's a goal scorers goal, seeing where the goalkeeper is and putting it in the corner. That was a nice goal for her to finish her career on.”
Cornell would keep attacking throughout the second half, but the Big Green defense held on. With three minutes left to play, the Big Red has on last chance on a free kick, but the ball sailed just wide of Casey Cousineau. She finished the game with two saves for Dartmouth.
With the victory, the Big Green close out the season with a 1-3-3 record in the Ivy League and 8-4-4 overall record. The loss dropped Cornell to 2-4-1 in conference play, 9-4-4 overall.
