NEWARK, N.J. – Dartmouth women's basketball senior Lakin Roland scored her 1,000th career point as the Big Green took down NJIT 46-39, in Newark, N.J.
The victory improves Dartmouth to 5-11, while the Highlanders drop to 3-10.
Around the 5:30 mark of the first, with the Big Green leading 5-4, Roland hit a jumper near the free throw line for the milestone basket. She finished the game with a team-high 16 points, shooting 6 of 19 from the floor and going 2 of 5 from beyond the arc.
“I'm really proud of Lakin Roland, head coach Belle Koclanes said. “She's so coachable and she keeps getting better and better. As a human being she's amazing to be around. Lakin is really growing into her leadership role. She was always a leader through her play, but she's becoming a leader on the court, off the court and in every situation.”
Despite a late NJIT rally that included a 7-0 run in the game's final minutes, Dartmouth's defense came through when it mattered most. Through out most of the contest, the Big Green relied on their defensive presence to earn their final non-conference victory of the season. Dartmouth held the Highlanders to just six points in the first and third quarters and held their leading scorer, Leah Horton to just nine points.
“We were switching back and forth between our man and our zone which takes great communication,” Koclanes said. “We knew we had to keep the ball out of Horton's hands inside the paint. I'm really proud of Olivia Smith's effort on that.”
After a dominant first quarter the Big Green took a 21-6 lead. However, NJIT would not go away completing a 13-4 run to end the first half.
Ahead 27-19 at the half, Dartmouth returned to the floor for what would be a low scoring third quarter that ended with a jumper at the buzzer for sophomore Amber Mixon, giving the Big Green a 38-25 lead heading into the final stanza.
Dartmouth closed out the fourth quarter after Kate Letkewicz made three of four free throws in the game's final minutes to clinch the victory for the Big Green.
Dartmouth returns to Leede Arena on Jan. 9 to open up conference play with Ivy League foe Harvard at 6 p.m.
