McEachern, Rumley Aid in Softball Win over Lamar

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Junior Katie McEachern led the Big Green with four runs batted in and Senior Kristen Rumley picked up her second win of the season with a complete game performance as softball defeated Lamar, 5-4, on Saturday at the Texas Invitational.
Rumley allowed three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. McEachern gave the team a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first. Sophomore Alyssa Jorgensen singled up the middle before a fielder's choice hit by senior Meg Averitt forced her out at second.
The Lady Cardinals tied the contest in the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run by Casey Cromwell and then an unearned RBI double by Stephanie Meeuwsen.
The Big Green (2-6) retook a 4-2 lead in the second on a triple by junior Kathy Dzienkowski down the right field line. Next batter freshman Lourlin Lara reached on a throwing error by the pitcher Laura Napoli and then advanced all the way to third base. McEachern added the second run with a two-out RBI single to the shortstop.
Lamar (5-9) cut the deficit by a run in the third with an RBI triple to right center by Shannon Sain. Rumley got out of the inning with just one run against as she struck out the next hit and then got a pop out. The Lady Cardinals tied the game in the fourth with a one-out single up the middle by Corina Thornton. The Dartmouth defense took over and with bases loaded Lara sent a bullet from right field to the plate to end the inning.
In the fifth it was a leadoff homer by McEachern that gave the Big Green the eventual game-winner.
Lauren Dannelley started the contest for the Lady Cardinals and allowed two earned runs in three innings. Napoli was dealt the loss and allowed one run in the final four innings.
The nightcap against Texas Southern was canceled due to inclement weather in Austin.
