HANOVER, N.H. — Junior Lakin Roland finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Brown was held without a field goal for the final nine minutes, but a late offensive foul on the Big Green women allowed the Bears to hold onto a three-point victory, 50-47, on Friday evening at Leede Arena.
The loss puts Dartmouth at 10-10 on the season and 1-5 in Ivy League play. Brown's win put them at 9-11 and 3-3 in the league.
Sophomore Fanni Szabo chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds while senior Tia Dawson was outstanding on the glass and grabbed 10 rebounds in 13 minutes. As a group, Dartmouth shot 32.8 percent from the field and pulled down 49 rebounds – with 15 on the offensive side.
Ellise Sharpe paced Brown with 19 points and five steals. Sharpe made 9-of-10 from the charity stripe and the rest of the team went 9-14. The Dartmouth defense held Sophie Bikofsky in check with nine points, as she shot 3-of-7 from the field and went 3-of-4 from the line. Brown did not convert on a three-point opportunity during play and finished 0-for-7. Defensively, Brown did force 29 Dartmouth turnovers with 17 steals and 22 points off turnovers.
Rebecca Musgrove opened play with a layup for Brown, but Szabo tied the game on the next possession. The Big Green took a lead, 8-6, with a jumper by Szabo with 14:31 left. Dartmouth increased its early lead (17-9) with a 9-3 run and finished the spurt with a layup by Roland at 8:39.
With 4:04 remaining Brown responded and retook the lead on a layup by Sharpe. Jordin Alexander completed a 14-3 run by the Bears, who led 23-20 with 3: 34 left to play in the first stanza. At the break, the visitors had a three-point lead, 25-22.
Roland had eight points for the Big Green, who shot 41.7 percent from the field. Sharpe had seven for the Bears as they shot 32.1 percent.
Early in the second, Brown took a seven-point advantage, 31-24, on a jumper by Alexander at 16:48. That lead would increase to 13 points, 43-30, with 9:01 left on a layup by Sharpe.
Dartmouth battled back and didn't allow a Brown field goal for the final nine minutes. The Big Green cut the deficit with an 11-0 run on baskets by Szabo, Roland, and trey by freshman Amber Mixon whose bucket made it a one-point game, 45-44, with 2:47 left.
Bikofsky and Sharpe finished out the game with free throws down the stretch. Dartmouth though had one last chance, but a turnover at mid-court ended the comeback.
Dartmouth will hit the road after a five-game homestand with four games away from Leede Arena beginning next Friday at Cornell and next Saturday at Columbia.
