TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After overcoming a 3-0 deficit, No. 60 Dartmouth men's tennis mounted a comeback, but ultimately came up short, falling to No. 32 Florida State, 4-3, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Seminoles improved to 16-5 on the season, while the Big Green dipped to 9-8.
FSU had a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles and a 7-5 win at the No. 3 position to take the doubles point and head into singles with a one-point edge. At No. 2, sophomore Max Schmidt and junior Brendan Tannenbaum had a 5-4 lead over Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and Michael Rinaldi when the match went unfinished.
The Seminoles were on the verge of a victory after a 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 4 singles and a 6-3, 6-5 defeat at No. 6, but junior Dovydas Sakinis picked up Dartmouth's first point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Benjamin Lock at the No. 1 position.
Soon after, senior Chris Kipouras made it 3-2, defeating Marco Nunez in the first and third sets, 6-3, 6-4, while falling in the second, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles. At No. 3, freshman Ciro Riccardi had a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 defeat of No. 90 Rinaldi to tie the score at three. It was a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 victory by Terrell Whitehurst at the No. 6 singles that gave the Seminoles that final point.
This was Dartmouth's final non-conference match of the season. The Green will host No. 26 Columbia on April 4 and No. 46 Cornell on April 5, with both contests being played at 1 p.m.
