NEW YORK — Senior Kristen Rumley became the fifth Dartmouth softball pitcher in program history to throw a no-hitter as the Big Green swept Columbia, 8-0 and 9-0 in a pair of six-inning games on Saturday afternoon in Hanover-like conditions.
This is the third time that Dartmouth has thrown a no-hitter against the Lions. Christina Maybaum '98 threw a perfect game on April 5, 1996 and Danica Giugliano '04 tossed a no-hitter on April 17, 2004.
“It was a bit nerve-wracking as I didn't want to call the wrong pitch throughout the game,” said head coach Shannon Doepking. “Kristen was outstanding inside the circle today. She hit all her spots and even helped out at the plate.”
Rumley struck out 14 batters in 12 innings and allowed just two hits in the second game against the Lions. The senior ace allowed just one batter to reach base in the first game, a walk to Madison Gott in the third inning.
Dartmouth scored two runs in the second after Columbia starter Kayla Maloney retired the Big Green in order in the first. Sophomore Karen Chaw led off the inning, taking first after being hit by a pitch. Rumley then singled to right field and both runners moved a base on a fielder's choice by junior Kathy Dzienkowski. With runners on second and third, junior Kelsey Miller singled up the middle to plate Chaw and Rumley for a 2-0 advantage.
Dartmouth added another two-runs in the third and once again it was Rumley helping her own cause with a two-run single up the middle to score sophomore Maddie Damore and junior Morgan McCalmon.
The Big Green continued to tack on runs in the fourth with three runs on five hits. Miller opened the frame with a triple down the left field line, followed by an infield single by freshman Tiffany Dyson that scored Miller. Junior Katie McEachern doubled down the line and scored Dyson to increase the lead to 6-0. Chaw finished the stanza with a RBI single to right field.
Dartmouth scored its eighth run in the sixth on a solo home run by McEachern to right field.
Rumley struck out five of the final nine batters she faced in the contest and got the Lions to ground out eight times.
Maloney was dealt the loss allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits in three innings. Tonia Wu threw the remaining three frames and surrendered two runs on five hits.
Rumley stood inside the circle for the second game and was economical throwing 36 of her 45 pitches for strikes with five punch-outs.
Dartmouth punished Columbia starting pitcher Tessa Kroll for six runs in 1.2 innings of work. The Big Green led 4-0 after the top of the first inning. McEachern walked on five pitches and freshman Lourlin Lara singled up the middle and battled back from a 0-2 deficit with four fouls before putting the ball in play.
The visitors loaded the bases after Damore reached on a fielder's choice. Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead when Chaw reached base on a hit by pitch. With the bases loaded again, Dzienkowski singled up the middle to score Chaw and Damore. Dartmouth added its fourth run on an infield single by Dyson.

In the second, back-to-back home runs by Damore and Chaw made it a six-run advantage for the Green. Columbia finally broke its hitless streak with a double by Wu. Rumley quickly erased the thoughts of a comeback with a groundout and two strikeouts. The Big Green bats were stymied for the next three innings, although the team did leave four runners on base off two hits.
In the sixth frame, Damore broke open the score with a three-run blast down the left field line for a nine-run lead. McEachern doubled to open the inning and then Lara reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Rumley ended the contest in the sixth with two grounders and then got Kayla Shimoda to swing at all three pitches.
Damore finished the day going 4-for-7 with four RBIs. Chaw went 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs. As a group, the Big Green had 20 hits on the day with both McEachern and Dyson finishing with three hits each. Rumley, Miller, Dzienkowski and Lara all had two hits.
Dartmouth (10-13, 3-1 Ivy North) will make its triumphant home debut next weekend as the Big Green will welcome Princeton on Friday and Cornell on Saturday. The last time the Big Green held a home contest at the Dartmouth Softball Park, the team raised the Johnson Crowley Trophy as winners of the Ivy League Championship. All four games will be streamed live (weather permitting) on the Ivy League Digital Network. Brett Franklin will make the call this season for the Big Green.
