PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Four players finished in double figures and was led by senior Tia Dawson with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Brown, 71-53, on Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Dartmouth (14-13, 5-8 Ivy) played one of its best offensive games against the Bears shooting to the tune of 55.6 percent from the floor, 42.9 from the outside and 71.4 from the line. Fanni Szabo had a game-high 14 points; senior Milica Toskovic had 12 points and six assists and junior Lakin Roland had 11 points and eight rebounds.
With the win, Dartmouth is guaranteed to finish at least .500 on the season with one game remaining. The overall record is the best for the program since the 2008-09 season, the last time the team qualified for the postseason.
The Big Green secured 35 rebounds to Brown's 28. Interior offense led the way for the Big Green, as the team dropped 44 points inside.
Kennedy Martin scored the opening basket for the Bears 33 seconds into play. After that, Dartmouth led the remainder of the half and took its first lead on a jumper by Toskovic at 17:16. The Big Green raced out to a double-digit lead with a 13-0 run completed by a trey by freshman Kate Letkewicz.
During the run, Dawson had four points and six rebounds. Brown attempted a comeback with an 8-point spurt, but the deficit never reached a single possession. Sophie Bikofsky ended Brown's run with a pair of free throws to decrease Dartmouth's lead to 17-13.
The Big Green responded quickly once again with 11 straight points as Roland took and netted six points. Dawson pushed the edge to 28-15 with 4:06 left with an old-fashion three-point play. Dartmouth's court presence was a key to the first half, as the team had nine assists.
Toskovic was the catalyst with five and made a few unbelievable passes inside to Dawson and junior Daisy Jordan. Toskovic finished the half with wide-open three in the corner after a pass by Mixon.
Dartmouth shot a season-best 56.7 percent from the floor and scored 26 points in the paint with 11 off turnovers and 10 on the second chance. Dawson led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds and Roland added eight and three. The team pulled down 20 rebounds and forced seven turnovers.
Janie White had six points for the Bears off the bench in 10 minutes.
In the second, Dartmouth increased the lead to 21 (52-31) on an 11-2 run culminated by a three from freshman Kate Letkewicz. Brown made a small comeback, but the deficit never reached single digits. Late in the half Letkewicz gave the Big Green a 24-point lead with a layup at 1:53. Senior Nicole Beresford hit a pair of free throws late in the game.
