HANOVER, N.H. — For the second straight season, the Brown Bears played the spoilers role and upset the Dartmouth softball team ending the Big Green's 11-game unbeaten streak on Saturday afternoon in Ivy League play. Dartmouth took the first game 6-1 but then the visitors run-ruled the hosts 9-0 in five innings.
Dartmouth (19-14, 12-2 Ivy) faced arguably one of its toughest in-league tests on Saturday, as Brown's pitching duo of Leah Nakashima and Katie Orona stymied the Big Green offence for all but one inning of the doubleheader.
The Big Green still record six hits against Nakashima and due to her lack of control, the team added eight extra base runners with five hit batters and three walks. Dartmouth didn't make it easy on themselves and stranded 11 runners on base, which included a pair of bases-loaded situations in the first and second innings.
Brown (11-17, 5-9 Ivy) got on the board in the third on a leadoff solo home run by Trista Chavez.
In the Big Green fourth, a pair of errors made by the Bears moved Dartmouth into scoring position. Sophomore Chloe Madill reached base on an error by the second baseman and then advanced on the second fumble of the frame. Freshman Lourlin Lara singled home pinch runner classmate Tiffany Dyson on a hit up the middle to knot the contest even at one.
In the sixth, the Big Green unloaded with five runs on three hits and once again errors plagued the Bears. Dartmouth loaded the bases with a pair of hit batters (Madill and Lara) sandwiched between a bunt single by sophomore Alyssa Jorgensen.
The Big Green took the lead on a fielder's choice hit by sophomore Maddie Damore on what should have been a force play at the plate, but Madill slide under the tag and was called safe. During the next at-bat by sophomore Karen Chaw, Nakashima tossed a wild pitch behind the catcher and plated Jorgensen from third. Chaw then ripped a hard hit double to left center and scored two more runs to take a 5-1 advantage. The last run of the inning came off the bat of senior Kristen Rumley.
Inside the circle, Rumley retired the side in the seventh to secure her 11th win of the season. She allowed just the one run in the third and fanned six for the complete-game victory. Nakashima took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits.
In the second game, Yeram Park opened up the scoring the Bears with a one-out sacrifice fly off junior Morgan McCalmon.
Three pitches into the third, a 20-minute rain delay halted play before Brown unleashed eight runs on 11 hits to take a 9-0 advantage. McCalmon's afternoon was ended early as she surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits before making way to freshman Breanna Ethridge, who completed the remaining 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits.
Orona picked up her seventh win of the season for the Bears and allowed two hits to the Big Green.
Saturday's shutout was the first time the Big Green did not record a run since last April 27, when Harvard blanked the Big Green in the opener of the regular season series finale in Hanover, 2-0, in eight innings.
Dartmouth is now two games ahead of Harvard in the Ivy League North Division. Harvard took both games in Saturday's doubleheader against Yale. Dartmouth and Harvard will meet next weekend in a home-and-home series.
Dartmouth and Brown will square off in another doubleheader on Sunday to complete the four-game set. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
