WACO, Texas – In the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, No. 38 Dovydas Sakinis fell to No. 52 Tin Ostojic of Wichita State by a score of 7-6(3), 6-3 at the Hurd Tennis Center on Baylor's campus.
“Congrats to Tin Ostojic on a well-played match,” head coach Chris Drake said after the match. “He competed well and made Dovy play a ton of balls today. Also, congratulations to Dovydas on a fantastic season. He set a new standard for what Dartmouth players can achieve and I know he is motivated to push the bar higher next year.”
After being delayed by more than an hour and a half while a rainstorm swept through the area, the Big Green junior and his opponent opened the first set evenly matched. The two traded points throughout the majority of the first and went to a tiebreaker before Ostojic won by a score of 7-6(3).
After dropping the first set, Sakinis and Ostojic returned to court 16 for the second. Playing under a sweltering Texas sun, Sakinis earned the first point and took a 2-1 lead before Ostojic turned things around and took a 4-3 advantage. After that, the Shockers' junior never looked back, wrapping up the second with a 6-3 victory.
“Today, Dovydas had to deal with the nerves of playing at NCAA's and wanting to do well for Dartmouth, and he just couldn't quite get over the hump in the first set,” Drake continued. “The hot and humid conditions combined with very slow courts made for physical points, but they were the same for both players and Tin deserved the win today.”
Sakinis' first trip to the NCAA Singles Championship has come to an end, while Ostojic will advance to the second round to face Texas Tech's Felipe Soares on Thursday.
