ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Dartmouth volleyball team returned to the court for the second day of the Oakland Tournament on Saturday, defeating Eastern Illinois, 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22) before falling to the hosts, the Golden Grizzlies, by the same score, (19-25, 31-29, 21-25, 13-25).
The Big Green are now 3-5 on the year, while the Panthers dipped to 5-8 and Oakland improved to 6-8.
Junior Emily Astarita was named to the All-Tournament Team at the end of Dartmouth's final match against Oakland. Throughout the weekend, she amassed 61 kills, four service aces, 27 digs, one assist, one block solo and seven block assists.
Against EIU, Astarita ended the match with 27 kills to lead both teams, while senior Paige Caridi was the only player on either team to record a double-double, amassing 12 kills and 10 digs. Fellow senior Kayden Cook recorded 55 assists. In the match against Oakland, Caridi had 14 kills and Astarita had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Leonard had a team-leading 16 digs and one service ace.
There was no clear leader in the first set, as there were 15 ties and there were never more than three points between the two teams before the one trailing would catch up. The last tie occurred at 23, when a Dartmouth error gave EIU its final point of the set. An Astarita kill put the Big Green at match point, while an ace by the junior gave Dartmouth the victory.
Dartmouth and EIU were right on each other's tails for the first few points for the second set. With the Panthers' leading, 11-10, they scored four unanswered points that gave them a 15-10 edge and made it difficult for the Big Green to catch up. Dartmouth got within three points of EIU (22-19), but the Panthers made it to match point off two kills, and another EIU kill gave it its first win of the day.
Much like the other two sets, the third was incredibly close. Fourteen ties later, the Panthers were ahead, 18-17, but four straight Dartmouth points off three EIU errors and an ace by Caridi put the Big Green up, 21-18. The teams traded points back-and-forth until the score was 23-21, but a kill apiece by Cook and fellow senior Kaira Lujan put Dartmouth one set away from taking the entire match.
The Green led from the start of the fourth set, winning the first two points and going on a four-point run off kills by Caridi and fellow senior Allison Brady, an ace by freshman Zoe Leonard and an EIU error to put them ahead, 7-3. Kills by Astarita and junior Danielle Glinka put the Green at match point (24-21) and, following another Green error, Lujan's kill ended the set.
In the first set against Oakland, the Golden Grizzlies and the Big Green were relatively evenly matched until the home team went on a five-point run to give it a 16-10 lead. Dartmouth got within four points (23-19), but a kill and a Green error gave the victory to Oakland.
Dartmouth won the first point of the second set and remained ahead until Oakland scored three straight to take the lead for the first time that set (13-12). The two teams tied the score 14 times and one or the other was at match point six times before the Green finally took the win. With a score of 29-29, a kill by Caridi and an ace by Leonard tied the score at 1-1.
The Golden Grizzlies took the third set even after the Big Green led for the opening points. With Dartmouth leading, 17-16, Oakland scored five consecutive points to have a 22-16 edge. The Green got within three (24-21) off two errors on the other side of the net, but an error of their own gave the set to the home team.
Oakland scored five straight points to start the fourth set, giving them a 5-0 lead before a kill by Brady could get the Big Green on the board. The Golden Grizzies got as far as 12 points ahead (22-10), but Dartmouth made it a 22-12 match off an error by the opponent and a kill by junior Molly Kornfeind. Oakland's final point was off a Dartmouth error, ending the set swiftly.
Dartmouth will travel to Rhode Island to face Bryant at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
