HANOVER, N.H. – After a relatively quiet first half, with just one goal occurring in the 19th minute, the Dartmouth women's soccer team went on to score five goals within 30 minutes in the second, defeating Sacred Heart, 6-0, at Burnham Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Green improved to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 3-5-0.
For the fourth game in a row, senior Lucielle Kozlov netted two goals, opening scoring early in the first half and then tacking on one more soon after commencing the second 45-minute period. Also finding the back of the net twice was sophomore Melanie Vangel, while classmates Lindsay Knutson and Gia Parker each tallied their first markers of the season.
“I thought that, after expending a ton of energy on Friday, that we did great not allowing chances in the first half and then having good possession in the second,” head coach Ron Rainey said after the game. “That possession allowed us to create scoring chances and see goals go into the net. It's been good to see us taking care of these opportunities.”
The first 20 minutes of the game were quiet, with neither team gaining possession for long before having the ball taken away. At 19:08, freshman Remy Borinsky's corner kick landed directly in front of the box and, after a bit of scrambling by players on both teams, Kozlov fired the ball past the goalkeeper to get the Green on the board. The two teams took just a pair of shots apiece in the remaining 30 minutes, and the game headed into the second half relatively evenly matched.
That all changed when the teams returned to the field, as the Big Green scored four goals in a 13-minute span. At 51:58, sophomore Brittany Champagne ran up the left and fired at the net, and a diving Talia Schwartz stopped the shot with her fingertips, only to have Kozlov knock in the deflected ball. Less than four minutes later, senior Jackie Friedman's shot brought the keeper out of her cage and allowed Vangel to deposit goal one of two into the net.
A mere 30 seconds later, Knutson picked up Vangel's deflected shot and scored her first of the year and, at 64:59, Vangel was back, kicking the ball over Schwartz's outstretched hands as she slid towards the Big Green sophomore.
After Vangel's second tally, there were a few shots, a foul or two and an offside, but that was it until the 85th minute. With less than five minutes remaining on the clock, junior Jessica Lukas ran down the left and passed the ball to Parker, who was running towards the middle of the box. Maintaining her momentum, Parker shot to the left to give Dartmouth its sixth and final goal of the day.
“The team really stepped up today and didn't allow solid chances for the opponent to get a goal, which is what we want as a group,” Rainey continued. “This weekend was better than last weekend. I know we are all looking forward to hosting UMass Lowell on Thursday.
The Big Green outshot the Pioneers, 14-6, and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. In net, junior Casey Cousineau made four saves to earn her fourth win of the season, while Schwartz stopped five shots.
Dartmouth will be back at Burnham on Thursday, Sept. 24, when it hosts UMass Lowell at 7 p.m.
