HANOVER, N.H. - With the score tied at one heading into the second half, the Dartmouth women's soccer team went on to score three goals in the second to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-1, on a crisp fall day at Burnham Field.
The Big Green improved to 6-1-1 and have now won five straight games, while the River Hawks fell to 2-7-0.
Leading the charge for Dartmouth were junior Meredith Gurnee and freshman Remy Borinsky, who both ended the evening with a goal and an assist for three points.
“First off, I give great credit to UMass Lowell, who came out and worked very hard,” head coach Ron Rainey said. “They were presented with a chance to tie the game and they took it. Our team recharged in the second and there were some really nice finishes.
Sophomore Melanie Vangel opened scoring in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a collision that took down the UMass Lowell player that had been defending her, shooting to the left of the net after receiving a beautiful cross from senior Lucielle Kozlov.
Dartmouth's lead did not last long, as the River Hawks' Katelyn Vieira tied the score at 23:23 after Alex Guzman's corner kick landed right in front of her and Vieira forcefully headed the ball past a Big Green defender and into the left of the goal. The remainder of the first was quiet and, with neither team able to capitalize on a goalie out of her cage or a well-placed ball, the game went to the second tied at one.
Just five minutes after returning to the field for the second half, Gurnee scored the game winner. Seconds before, senior Jackie Friedman's free kick landed just outside the box and, with her back to the net, Gurnee managed to head the ball past keeper Julia Schneider, who was off her post, and into the left corner.
Borinsky scored the first marker of her collegiate career at 75:17. With four defenders around her, fellow freshman Lauren Lucas passed the ball to an open Borinsky, who evaded one more UMass Lowell defender and fired the ball into the right of the cage, just over Schneider's outreaching hands. With just under 12 minutes to play, Schneider had an impressive save to keep the home team's lead to just two, punching the ball over the net while jumping towards it.
At 86:50, sophomore Brittany Champagne's shot hit off the crossbar, landing just out of the keeper's reach. Junior Jessica Lukas picked up the ball and, from inside the box, fired past Schneider before she could regain her footing.
“I was proud of Meredith being brave and flicking that ball into the net for the second goal, and it was great to see a nice little combination with Lauren and Remy,” Rainey continued. “We had some solid goals and we were classy and that was nice to see.”
Dartmouth outshot UMass Lowell, 21-3, and held a 10-4 edge on corner kicks. In net, junior Casey Cousineau had two saves and earned her sixth victory of the season, while Schneider stopped eight shots in the loss.
“Sunday's game will be a great opportunity for us and we will have to play our best game of the year to get a win,” Rainey concluded. “We have two good days of training to get fast and prepare. Everyone is really excited to open Ivy play against a good team.”
Dartmouth will open conference action on the road on Sunday, taking on Brown at 1 p.m.
