ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Dartmouth freshman Julia Calbi was not phased by the competition in her collegiate debut, finishing in a tie atop the leaderboard at the Chesapeake Bay Invitational this weekend. But Towson's Emma Hjarne took home medalist honors after winning a one-hole playoff with Calbi, who led the Big Green to a fourth-place finish at the par-72 Naval Academy Golf Course.
Calbi entered the day with a one-stroke lead ahead of Penn's Rachel Dai and two ahead of Hjarne with a four-over 148. While Dai fell back with an 81 (+9), Hjarne caught Calbi by carding a her third straight 75 (+3) to tie her with a nine-over 225. Hjarne then bested Calbi on the playoff hole to win the tournament.
The top four scorers for Dartmouth were all freshmen, including Angela Zhang who matched Calbi's 77 (+5) today to tie for 14th with a 235 (+18). Catharine Roddy finished alone in 24th place with her seven-over 79 today, totaling 238 (+21) for the three rounds. In 28th place was Hana Bradshaw with a 23-over 240.
Although Penn did not have a single golfer finish in the top five, the Quakers managed to win the event by five strokes on the strength of their 13-over 301 in the second round to set a single-round record on the course. Penn ended the tournament with a 61-over 925, while Towson and Longwood tied for second with a 930. Dartmouth was seven strokes behind those two at 937, 14 strokes ahead of Wagner in fifth.
