THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth women's soccer will open Ivy League play on Sunday, heading to Rhode Island to face Brown at 1 p.m. The Bears and the Big Green will be meeting for the 41st time, with Dartmouth carrying a 20-18-2 all-time lead.
LAST TIME OUT
With the score tied at one heading into the second half, the Green went on to score three goals to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-1, on a crisp Thursday evening at Burnham Field. Leading the charge for Dartmouth were Meredith Gurnee and Remy Borinsky, who both ended the evening with three points off a goal and an assist. Melanie Vangel opened scoring in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a collision that took down the UMass Lowell player that had been defending her, shooting to the left of the net after receiving a beautiful cross from Lucielle Kozlov. Dartmouth's lead did not last long, as the River Hawks' Katelyn Vieira tied the score at 23:23 after Alex Guzman's corner kick landed right in front of her and Vieira forcefully headed the ball past a Big Green defender and into the left of the goal. Just five minutes after returning to the field for the second half, Gurnee scored the game winner. Seconds before, Jackie Friedman's free kick landed just outside the box and, with her back to the net, Gurnee managed to head the ball past keeper Julia Schneider, who was off her post, and into the left corner. With four defenders around her, Lauren Lucas passed the ball to an open Borinsky, who evaded one more UMass Lowell defender and fired the ball into the right of the cage, just over Schneider's outreaching hands, to score her first marker of her collegiate career. At 86:50, Brittany Champagne's shot hit off the crossbar, landing just out of the keeper's reach, and Jessica Lukas picked up the ball and, from inside the box, fired past Schneider before she could regain her footing.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
On Wednesday, Brown hosted its second of four consecutive home games, defeating Sacred Heart (whom Dartmouth defeated, 6-0, last weekend) by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Erin Katz score all three of the Bears' goals, including the game-winner three minutes into the first overtime period. She currently leads the team with those three goals and an assist for seven points and is followed by Jillian DeSimone with four points off one marker and a pair of helpers.
LAST TIME AGAINST BROWN
On Sept, 29, 2014, the Bears and the Green opened conference season with a 1-1 tie at Burnham Field. Kozlov scored in the 19th minute, but Brown answered with just 1:58 to play in regulation to force overtime, during which neither team was able to find the back of the net. Dartmouth finished the contest outshooting the opponent, 17-8, and were 11-1 in set pieces. In net, Tatiana Saunders made four saves.
RAINEY AND COMPANY
In his first season with the Big Green in 2014, head coach Ron Rainey compiled a record of 8-5-4 and a 3-1-3 mark in Ivy League play. Joining Rainey on the bench are Grace Barnard, who is in her second season as an assistant coach, and Cord Farmer, who joined Dartmouth after spending last season at Nevada.
