New York Comes to Hanover
• With victories in its last three games, Dartmouth can record its first perfect homestand of five games or longer since 1958-59 with wins over Columbia and Cornell this weekend.
• Last Saturday, the Big Green handed Harvard a 63-50 defeat in Leede Arena thanks to a 25-4 run in the second half that erased an 11-point deficit.
• Freshman Evan Boudreaux, Dartmouth's leading scorer and rebounder at 15.9 ppg and 8.6 rpg, earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for the sixth time this year, matching the school record. He posted his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 boards against the Crimson.
• The major contributors to the decisive run were senior Malik Gill and sophomore Taylor Johnson who combined to score 21 of the Big Green's final 34 points on the night.
• Dartmouth features two others players averaging at least 10 ppg in sophomore Miles Wright (12.4) and senior Connor Boehm (10.7), the latter of whom needs just 14 points to become the 28th player in Big Green history to score 1,000.
Series vs. Columbia
• These two teams have squared off 208 times to date with the Lions leading, 109-99. Head coach Paul Cormier is 13-11 versus Columbia.
• The season series between the two has been swept each of the past five years with Dartmouth taking two in 2012-13 and again last year.
• In the first meeting last year, Miles Wright had 16 points and Gabas Maldunas scored his 1,000th point for Dartmouth in a 61-49 win, while Maodo Lo also hit 1,000 in his career for Columbia.
• Two weeks later in New York, Malik Gill came off the bench to spark the Green to an 84-71 triumph with 14 points and six assists. Five others also scored in double figures for Dartmouth.
• Dartmouth has gone 17-11 against Columbia in Leede Arena, 50-43 in Hanover since 1923.
Scouting the Lions
• Columbia has been on a tear since early December, winning nine of 10 games, including a season sweep of Cornell.
• Four players score in double figures, led by guard Maodo Lo at 16.1 ppg while making three three-pointers a night at nearly a 40 percent clip.
• Speaking of long-range shooting, Grant Mullins drains 42.1 percent of his treys, helping the Lions be the most prolific three-point shooting team in the league with 10.1 per game.
• Forward Alex Rosenberg is back after missing last season with an injury, and has tallied nearly 14 ppg, though he has missed five contests.
• While Luke Petrasek is the leading rebounder (5.7 rpg) and contributed 12.4 ppg on 54.3 percent shooting, he also stretches the defense when beyond the arc where he is 26-of-53 (.491).
• Kyle Smith (Hamilton '92) is in his sixth year as head coach of the Lions with a record of 89-78 after nine years as an assistant at St. Mary's.
Series vs. Cornell
• Dartmouth has played the Big Red 210 times entering this game, more than any other opponent, and it's all tied up with each side winning 105 after last year's series split.
• Cornell took the game at Leede in overtime, 81-72, as Robert Hatter scored 19 and Shonn Miller posted a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double, countering Miles Wright's 19 and Gabas Maldunas' double-double.
• In Ithaca, the Green grinded out a 56-45 triumph with Malik Gill and Alex Mitola each scoring 14 while Hatter had a game-high 23 for the Big Red.
• Dartmouth is 16-12 versus Cornell in Leede Arena having won three of the last five meetings.
• Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier is 10-14 against the Big Red during his career.
Scouting the Big Red
• Cornell enters the weekend having lost five of its last seven games, but the two wins have come on the road — at Saint Peter's and at Howard.
• Like Dartmouth, the Big Red feature a high-scoring freshman, but theirs does more damage outside the arc. Matt Morgan scores 16.6 ppg and leads Cornell with 39 three-pointers, but at an accuracy of just 32.8 percent.
• The top scorer for the Big Red is Robert Hatter, who leads the league at 19.9 ppg. However, the 6-2 guard has missed the last two games.
• The duo of Hatter and Morgan have attempted 43 percent of the team's shots all season, but Darryl Smith (8.8 ppg) could be a factor thanks to his accuracy (65.1 FG pct., 55.0 3FG pct.).
• Rebounding has been an issue for Cornell, getting beat by nearly eight boards a night. But David Onuorah holds his own at 7.9 rpg.
• The Big Red shoot just 62.5 percent at the line, though the top three scorers hit over 75 percent.
• Head coach Bill Courtney (Bucknell '92) is in his sixth year with a record of 57-104. Prior to coming to Ithaca, he had assistant jobs at Va. Tech, UVA, Providence, George Mason and Bowling Green.
Boudreaux Boudreaux Golly!
Freshman Evan Boudreaux has led Dartmouth in scoring in nine of the first 16 games, including his 18 points in a 63-50 win over Harvard on Jan. 23. He has also led the team in rebounding 10 times (13 against the Crimson), recording five double-doubles along the way, third-most in the conference. His latest outing garnered him Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for the sixth time this year, tying a school record and two shy of the conference record. He has won the award every other week all season, so at that pace, he will break the record after the final week of games.
Bench Support
After yielding 12 straight points to Harvard at the start of the second half to fall behind by 11, Dartmouth was in need of a spark. Enter senior Malik Gill and Taylor Johnson, two players that did not even play against the Crimson in the first meeting. All this duo did in the final 11:30 was score 21 points (season-high 11 for Gill, career-high 10 for Johnson), igniting a 25-4 run to help the Big Green win by 13. Johnson didn't miss a shot, going 3-for-3 with two triples and two free throws, and Gill swiped the ball four times while both dished out a pair of assists.
The Countdown is at 14
Senior Connor Boehm contributed nine points to the 63-50 victory over Harvard while playing in his 100th career game. But he is on the verge of a bigger milestone as he enters the weekend needing just 14 points to become the 28th player in program history to tally 1,000 in a career. If he can simply score at the same rate as his career average, he will thrill the home fans with the historic bucket.
Topping 70
The Big Green scored at least 70 points in four straight games , something they've done just three times this millennium, before falling short with 63 against Harvard on Jan. 23. It has been 15 years since Dartmouth has gone five consecutive games with 70 or more points.
Under 40
Dartmouth shot just 38.8 percent against Harvard on Jan. 23, yet still won the game by 13 points. It was just the second victory during Paul Cormier's second tenure as head coach when hitting less than 40 percent. The other win came last year in overtime against Northern Illinois (33.9 percent).
Taking Advantage at the Line
The foul line has been good to the Big Green since the calendar changed to 2016. Dartmouth has converted 79.0 percent (94-of-119) of its free throws in the five games of January, making at least 75 percent in each one. Conversely, Big Green opponents have struggled at the charity stripe, not topping 70 percent even once and gradually getting worse in each subsequent game, culminating with a ghastly 30 percent (6-of-20) performance by Harvard on Jan. 23. It was the lowest free throw percentage for a Dartmouth opponent since Cornell hit 25 percent (albeit 1-of-4) on Feb. 3, 2006.
Top Freshman Scorers
Boudreaux is 13th nationally in scoring among freshmen (15.9 ppg), which would be the second-highest ever for a Big Green freshman, behind only Dartmouth legend Ed Leede, who tallied 16.5 ppg in a 14-game schedule in 1944-45. Only five Ivy League freshmen (since the league was formed in 1956) have ever averaged more in a season, led by Brown's Earl Hunt in 1999-2000 (17.0), though Cornell's Matt Morgan (16.6) is currently ahead of Boudreaux as well.
