NEW YORK, N.Y. – In what was a back-and-forth second half that included over 10 lead changes, the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Columbia 76-73, in overtime.
The victory improves the Big Green to 7-12 overall, 2-1 in the Ivy League while the Lion's fall to 11-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
For the second week in a row, sophomore Kate Letkewicz led Dartmouth's offense with 23 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. The Big Green's seniors also stepped up when the team needed them as Lakin Roland poured in 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double-double. Daisy Jordan played one of her best games of the season as she scored 16 points.
“This team is growing more and more each day,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “We've talked about care and grit all week long and what it means to care about what were doing here and what it means to care for your teammates.”
In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, a Columbia field goal gave the Lions a 63-61 lead. Lekewicz was fouled and made both free throws to send the two teams into overtime. In the extra frame, Roland kept momentum on Dartmouth's side with a three-pointer in front of the Big Green bench. With 1:39 to play, the Lions completed a three-point play to take a 69-68 lead.
With just one minute to play, Columbia turned the ball over allowing Jordan to sink two free throws to give Dartmouth a 71-68 advantage. As the clock ran down to less than 30 seconds, the Lions just needed a trey to tie the contest.
Sophomore Andi Norman put the game out of reach for good making one of two from the charity stripe, as Roland grabbed the final rebound of the game to seal the victory. Norman finished the evening with six points off the bench for the Big Green.
Once again Dartmouth continued its hot streak in the first quarter. Led by Jordan, the Big Green jumped out to an early 22-12 lead. Columbia battled hard in the second to close the gap, but Dartmouth still held on to a 33-28 lead at the break.
Early in the third, sophomore Amber Mixon left the game with an injury, she did not return. The Big Green rallied as they found themselves in a back and forth quarter where each team traded baskets setting up the exciting finish.
“It's a grind every Ivy League game,” Koclanes said. “That's why I love the Ivy League because every game is going to be that way. Its about executing offensively and its about defending and getting shots and its about contesting shots and rebounding. That's the game of basketball, its really simple to say, but not simple to do. The more times we compete with the back and forth competition, the more mature we become.”
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night when the Big Green travel north to take on Cornell at 6 p.m.
