ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second night in a row, the Dartmouth women's basketball team went to overtime as the Big Green fell to Cornell 71-58, in a contest that saw 11 lead changes.
The loss drops Dartmouth to 7-13, 2-2 in the Ivy League, while the Big Red improve to 11-7 and 3-1 in conference play.
Senior Lakin Roland led the Big Green with 19 points and 16 rebounds, good for her third straight double-double. With 1:11 left to play in regulation, Roland drained a three to tie the game at 56.
Just prior to Roland's trey, Cornell hit two free throws to take a 54-51 lead. With 2:34 to go in the quarter, sophomore Amber Mixon drove hard to the basket to make a layup to close the deficit to just one.
In the extra frame, Dartmouth could not find its offensive footing as the Big Red made free throws to put the game out of reach for good.
“This is a hard place to play,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “Cornell is always a solid hard working team, particularly at home on their floor. They always give you their best game at home. It's the best we've competed in Ithaca and I'm proud about that. We had an opportunity to win the game at the buzzer, but we didn't make a play and then the last five minutes in overtime went to Cornell. For two teams to go into OT two nights in a row, that's awesome Ivy League basketball.”
The night got off to a slow start for both teams, as neither squad scored a basket in the first two minutes of the contest. By the end of the first, the Big Green held on to an 11-8 advantage. In the second, both Dartmouth and Cornell went back and forth before sophomore Emily Slagle hit a three at the buzzer to put the Big Green ahead 24-23 at the break.
The third quarter turned into a shootout as the teams combined for five ties. A Roland three on the Big Green's final possession of the quarter gave Dartmouth a 41-40 lead to set up the pivotal fourth.
“I'm really pleased with the way this basketball team is playing,” Koclanes said. “They're getting better, playing better and competing at a higher level these last three weeks. For our opening Ivy League weekend, I'm proud of the effort and we're going to take the lessons learned and we're going to get better next week.”
The Big Green return to action next weekend when Dartmouth plays host to Princeton on Friday at 7 p.m. and league leading Penn on Saturday at 6 p.m.
