HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team had its hands full with a talented Princeton squad, as the Big Green fell, 85-48 at Leede Arena on Friday night.
The loss drops Dartmouth to 7-14 overall, 2-3 in the Ivy League, while the Tigers improve to 14-4 and 3-2 in the conference.
Sophomore Kate Letkewicz turned in a great performance for the Big Green, scoring 17 points and grabbing seven rebounds just shy of the double-double. Dartmouth also saw the return of Fanni Szabo to the lineup, as she scored seven points in her first game back from an injury.
“Fanni is an offensive threat,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “We're easing her back in after her injury and she's still healing. We don't want her to come in and start rushing into things. We've been playing pretty well and we have a nice fluidity going. Now it's about building Fanni into that fluidity. She's excited and the team is excited to have her back.”
Unfortunately for the Big Green, Princeton's offense was tough to defend, especially from the field as the Tigers shot 49.2 percent and 48 percent from beyond the arc.
In the first quarter, the two teams were tied 5-5 early. However, Princeton ended the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 20-11 lead. In the second, the Tigers extended their advantage after shooting 53 percent from three-point range in the first half. Princeton took a 42-25 lead into the locker room at the break.
“We respect every single one of our opponents,” Koclanes said. “We learn from them and today Princeton reminded us how far we still have to go. We've come really far as a program in our three years and this team is one of the hardest working teams we've had so far and we want that to continue as we move forward.”
Another Tiger 8-0 run in the third extended Princeton's lead to 59-32 by the quarters end. In the fourth, Dartmouth kept competing, but could not overcome the advantage the Tigers built.
The Big Green will return to action tomorrow night to take on league leading Penn at home at 6 p.m.
