HANOVER, N.H. – Despite a solid complete game effort, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to league-leading Penn, 56-41 at Leede Arena on Saturday night.
The loss drops the Big Green to 7-15, 2-4 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers improve to 16-3 and 5-0 in the conference.
With 31 seconds to play in the game, the lights went out at Leede Arena and the official time was kept at the scorers table for the remainder of the contest. The interruption did not play a factor in the final decision as Dartmouth trailed by 14 points when the arena went dark.
Prior to the power outage, Big Green senior Lakin Roland turned in another solid performance scoring 21 points in the 38 minutes she saw on the floor. The teams were even from the field, shooting 35 percent. Dartmouth held a slight edge from beyond the arc, shooting 33 percent.
In the first quarter, the Big Green came out with a lot of fire as Dartmouth quickly rattled off a 7-0 run to open the contest. By the end of the first, the Big Green held on to a 13-9 advantage. In the second, the Quakers went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-18 lead into the locker room at the break.
“Our first quarter we came out of the locker room and executed the game plan perfectly,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “We came pretty close to what we needed to do to attack Penn's pressure and attack their zone. We were playing with really high physicality and we put Penn on their heals in the first quarter. We did a much better job tonight protecting our paint.”
Dartmouth came out strong in the third quarter thanks in part to five quick points from Roland to cut the deficit to just one point. However, Penn's offense continued to make shots, as Quakers took a 40-24 lead into the final stanza. With 1:21 left to play in the game, Penn drained a three which sealed the victory for the last unbeaten team in the conference.
Dartmouth returns to action next Friday when the Big Green travel to Yale, followed by a showdown in Providence with Brown on Saturday.
