NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After trailing by 13 points at halftime, Dartmouth mounted a second half comeback to defeat Yale, 68-63 in New Haven on Friday night.
The victory improves the Big Green to 8-15 overall, 3-4 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs fall to 11-13 and 2-5 in conference play.
Three Dartmouth players ended the night in double-figures in scoring. Senior Lakin Roland led the Big Green with 24 points, most of which came in the second half. Sophomore Kate Letkewicz finished with 18 points, as junior Fanni Szabo poured in 10.
Despite committing 13 turnovers in the first half, Dartmouth was able to rally in the third and fourth quarters en-route to the come from behind win. An 11-0 run highlighted by a trio of three pointers pulled the Big Green within seven points of Yale's lead in the final minutes of the third quarter.
Roland hit a couple of crucial three's to begin the final stanza, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 56-50. With 3:15 to play, Roland gave Dartmouth its first lead since the first quarter after she drained two from the charity stripe to put the Big Green up, 61-60. A pull up jumper by Roland extended the lead to 63-60 capping of a 10-0 Dartmouth run.
“It's a 40-minute game, sometimes 40 plus,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “Lakin is our senior leader and Lakin knows. She wasn't happy with her first half performance, but she turned it on in the second half. She made plays where she needed to and that's what you need your senior leaders to do.”
After a back and forth first quarter, Yale dictated play in the second going on a 14-0 run scoring 20 points off turnovers.
“At halftime we talked about taking care of the basketball and to keep the fight in you because there is 20 minutes left in this game,” Koclanes said. “You prepared all week to earn this victory, but you have to take care of the basketball to do that. We did a much better job in the second half doing that.”
Down 37-17, Szabo stepped up when her team needed her scoring seven points in the final minutes of the second quarter giving the Big Green the momentum they needed to mount their second half comeback.
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow when the Big Green take on Brown in Providence.
