PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second night in a row, the Dartmouth women's basketball team came from behind from a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat Brown, 63-50 in Providence on Saturday night.
The win improves the Big Green to 9-15, 4-4 in the Ivy League, while the Bears fall to 13-9, 1-7 in the conference.
After being the spark that led to last night's comeback, junior Fanni Szabo once again helped her team come from behind after she scored two quick field goals after halftime with Dartmouth trailing 35-21. She finished the night with 15 points.
For the Big Green it was a tale of two halves after, especially for senior forward Lakin Roland. After being held scoreless in the first half for the first time this season, she scored 13 points after the break including a jumper late in the third to give Dartmouth its first lead since their first possession of the game. She also grabbed 10 boards to earn her seventh double-double of the season.
“Fanni Szabo sparked our runs,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “Fanni is a competitor and you see her getting better and better each night. The team is locked in right now, they scored 32 points in the second half and held them to 15. The defensive effort was the game changer for us tonight.”
In the first half, the Big Green faced adversity after four of Dartmouth's starters picked up at least two fouls. Koclanes turned to her bench to help the Big Green get back in the game. Sophomore Olivia Smith turned in one of her best performances of the season, scoring 11 points.
“Of everyone who came off the bench, we gave Olivia a shout out in the locker room because she played 25 minutes coming in for Daisy. She was able to come in and do what we needed her to do at our five position.”
Brown went 15-15 from the charity stipe after being sent to line 13 times in the first half. In the third, a key 8-0 run got Dartmouth back in the contest. In the fourth the Big Green took control unlashing a 16-0 run that clinched the victory. By the final buzzer, four Dartmouth players finished the night in double figures in scoring. As a team, the Big Green shot 44 percent from the field and went 13-20 from the free throw line.
Dartmouth returns to the court next weekend to open up a four-game home stand, welcoming Cornell on Friday and Columbia on Saturday.
