HANOVER, N.H. – After leading from the opening tip, the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Cornell, 60-52 for its third consecutive Ivy League win.
The victory improves the Big Green to 10-15 overall, 5-4 in the conference, while the Big Red fall to 13-10, 5-4 in the Ivy League.
Senior Lakin Roland led the Big Green with 18 points in a contest where Dartmouth went 6 for 12 from beyond the arc and 52 percent from the field as team. The Big Green defense had its hands full with Cornell scoring sensation Nia Marshall, but made plays when it needed to.
Sophomore Amber Mixon's defensive effort gave way to four fast break points as she finished the night with seven points total.
“Amber's defense will always be able to generate offense for herself and you saw that here tonight,” head coach Belle Koclanes said. “She is just getting more and more confident. She's capable of getting to that rim and we're going to keep working at it.”
Late in the fourth quarter with Dartmouth ahead 55-52, Roland drove hard to the basket to make an important layup that forced the Big Red to foul for the remainder of the contest. Mixon drained three of four from the charity stripe with less than a minute to play to seal the victory.
The Big Green dictated play for the majority of the contest by completing an early 7-0 run to take a 25-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cornell inched back with an 8-0 run halfway through the second, but Dartmouth's defense tightened up when it had to, giving the Big Green a 37-30 lead at the break.
In the third, three-pointers by sophomore Kate Letkewicz and junior Fanni Szabo helped preserve Dartmouth's lead. Letkewicz finished the night with 16 points, while Szabo poured in 11, inching closer to the 1,000 career point milestone with 978 points.
“In the first quarter we zoned them,” Koclanes said. “We didn't really play a lot of zone the first time we played Cornell. This time around we said we need to do something different so we went zone. Defensively we got in passing lanes and offensively we made shots. The defense is always better when your offense is on point.”
Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow night for its annual Pink Game when the Big Green take on Columbia at home at 6 p.m.
