HANOVER, N.H. – Harvard spoiled Senior Day for the Dartmouth field hockey team, defeating the Big Green, 3-1, Saturday at Chase AstroTurf Field.
The Crimson (11-5, 6-0) clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title behind a second-half hat trick from Bente van Vlijmen. Dartmouth (4-11, 0-6) got a late goal from junior captain Morgan Philie, but it wasn't enough to close the gap in defeat.
The team honored three members of the Class of 2017 after the game as part of Senior Day, recognizing Paige Duffy, Joanne Nazareth and Heather Zezzo.
The player of the day for the home team, though, was sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Valerio. The Big Green keeper stopped 14 shots — including one on a penalty stroke bid by the Crimson — before giving way to Emma Plumb in the 59th minute following a collision just outside the cage. Plumb stopped two additional shots in her time in net.
Maddie Donahue aided the defensive effort with a defensive save late in the game.
In addition to Philie, Sarah Tabeek and Zezzo picked up points with assists on the lone Dartmouth goal, helping set up for the shot on a corner play.
The Big Green are back in action Sunday afternoon in Durham, taking on in-state rival New Hampshire at 2 p.m.
