Less than two months ago, 2014 Dartmouth graduate and seven-time NCAA champion Abbey D'Agostino, along with New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin, provided the iconic moment of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. During the qualifying heat of the 5000m, Hamblin stumbled on the runner directly in front of her, causing her to fall and collide with D'Agostino, who was running for the United States.
The collision could have led to tempers flaring, but the two runners both showed compassion and encouraged each other to get up and finish the race. Despite tearing ligaments in her knee, D'Agostino completed the final mile to cross the finish line, where she and Hamblin embraced.
The show of sportsmanship captured the hearts of people around the globe, and the duo was awarded the Fair Play Award, which recognizes athletes who exemplify sportsmanship at the Olympic Games, from the International Fair Play Committee. Relive this heart-warming moment in the video below.
