HANOVER, N.H. - Penn's Alexa Schneck scored the game-winning goal with 12:26 left in double-overtime to defeat the Dartmouth field hockey team, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.
Freshman goalkeeper Emma Plumb went nearly 90 minutes without allowing a goal, making 10, before Schneck's turnaround blast from the top of the circle beat her low and beyond the reach of her outstretched right leg.
“I'm extremely proud of our team and how they competed today,” head coach Amy Fowler said afterward. “We created some great chances to finish the game and, honestly, that is where we fell short. Our team defense was gritty and we did a better job in our deep defensive end.
“We now get an amazing opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the country,” Fowler added. “And on any given Sunday, anything can happen.”
Fowler's team must now rebound to take on top-ranked and the last remaining unbeaten team in the country on Sunday as the Big Green (3-7, 0-3 Ivy) travel to Storrs to play UConn at noon.
Plumb kept her team in the game with timely saves as Penn (7-3, 2-1 Ivy) kept pushing play toward the Dartmouth defensive end throughout. In all, the Quakers finished with a 27-7 edge in shot attempts and an 11-5 edge in shots on goal.
The game only reached the first overtime after the Big Green defensive unit stood its ground in the final moments of regulation. Penn had four corner play opportunities after the final horn sounded, but was able to continue its push for the late winner as penalty corners are untimed and can be called continuously after the final buzzer.
However, despite the pressure, Dartmouth held and forced the game into a sudden-victory situation. Both teams managed a trio of shots in the first 15-minute session with Penn's goalkeeper Liza Matta making a pair of saves and Plumb turning aside the lone shot on goal she faced in that session.
Schneck's goal was the only shot for either team in the last period of play, which lasted just two minutes and 34 seconds.
This was Dartmouth's second double-overtime game of the season with the previous game resulting in a shootout win for the Big Green against Bryant back in September.
