HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's basketball defeated Central Connecticut State, 61-51, in the 2016-17 season opener at Leede Arena on Friday night.
Three Big Green players finished the night in double-digits in scoring en route to the 10-point victory. Sophomore Isalys “Ice” Quinones, scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both of which were career-highs.
The double-double was also the first of the Chula Vista, California, native's career. Emily Dryden also set a new career high with 14 points in the 19 minutes of action she saw. As a team, the Big Green went 22-of-60 from the field and shot 61.9 percent from the charity stripe.
“Ice and Emily have been working so hard since the first day they've set foot on campus,” Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach, Belle Koclanes said. “Freshmen year they both had a lot of development and now you're starting to see the fruits of their labor. You're starting to see all the time they put in and the progress they're making. There is still lots of learning to go, but we're very excited with their progress and happy with their effort.”
In a tight contest, the Big Green performed well down the stretch, taking the lead for good with four minutes to play in the third quarter. With 2:41 to play in the third, senior Fanni Szabo gave Dartmouth a 45-40, lead thanks to a huge three-pointer. Szabo led her team with 16 points in the first game of her final season in Hanover.
The Blue Devils did not go into the night quietly. After capitalizing on a turnover, their leading scorer, Aleah Epps made it a two-point game at the buzzer at the end of the third. Epps finished the night with team-high 19 points and 15 rebounds.
The Big Green kept the pressure on CCSU after Szabo opened the final quarter with a three. The Blue Devils got within one before Andi Norman hit a trey from the corner to extend Dartmouth's lead to 55-49.
Freshman Annie McKenna made a key layup in the paint with a 1:45 to play to thwart any attempt of a late CCSU rally. She finished the game with four points and four boards in her rookie debut in a Big Green uniform.
“We focused on every possession,” Koclanes said. “I'm proud of the poise we had to keep leads, whether it was a one-point lead or a three, four or five, because we had all of those tonight. I'm proud of how we played in the fourth quarter to be able to bring it home.”
Dartmouth will travel to twin state rival Vermont on Sunday at 2 p.m. and will return home to Leede Arena on Nov. 23 when Holy Cross comes to Hanover.
