FARMVILLE, Va. — Sophomore duo Guilien Smith and Evan Boudreaux each produced 21 points for Dartmouth, but host Longwood (2-3) countered with a dozen three-pointers and two 20-point scorers of its own to defeat the Big Green (0-4), 86-80.
Isaiah Walton posted a game-high 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting with two triples, and Khris Davis added an even 20 to go with 11 rebounds for a double-double for the Lancers. As a team, Longwood hit 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from behind the arc and 49.2 percent (30-of-61) overall.
Seven of Smith's career-high 21 points came in the final minute as Dartmouth frantically attempted to overcome a seven-point deficit. Smith finished the night matching Walton's 7-of-14 shooting performance, but with three trifectas and 4-of-5 at the line. Boudreaux, meanwhile, canned 7-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-10 at the line for his season-high 21. Overall, the Big Green had its best offensive performance of the young season, shooting a robust 55.8 percent (29-of-52).
The game began well for Dartmouth as it jumped out to a 13-4 lead after just 3:30 had elapsed. Smith had a pair triples and junior Taylor Johnson another in the opening outburst as the Big Green canned their first five shots of the night.
With a balanced scoring attack, Dartmouth was able to stay ahead of Longwood for more than 17 minutes, with a third three-pointer from Smith and buckets sources like Wesley Dickinson, Ian Sistare and Ian Carter.
But the Longwood long balls started to chip away at the lead as Walton and Kendrick Thompson each popped a pair in the first half. When Chris Shields knocked down his only three-point attempt of the night with 2:46 left in the stanza, the Lancers owned their first lead at 32-30. Dartmouth briefly reclaimed the lead when Smith sank the first of two foul shots more than a minute later, but Longwood took a slim 38-37 advantage into the locker room after Boudreaux laid in a shot just before the buzzer.
The Big Green shot a sizzling 60 percent (15-of-25) over the first 20 minutes, including 4-of-8 from downtown. But a 3-for-7 performance at the foul line denied them their first lead at halftime this season. The Lancers made their 6-of-11 showing from long range count, plus turned seven Dartmouth turnovers into 10 points.
In the second half, the Green utilized a five-point spurt to take a two-point lead and force Longwood to call a timeout after less than two minutes of action. Johnson put Dartmouth on top one last time with a layup to make it 44-43 with 17:28 to play, only to have the Lancers rattle off seven straight points — the last three on a deep ball from Darrion Allen who chipped in 14 points on the night.
The missed free throws piled up for the Big Green as they missed five of their next six attempts. And when Boudreaux was whistled for an offensive foul, he also was hit for a technical, sending him to the bench with three fouls. It appeared the technical might spark his teammates as Sistare and senior Mike Fleming scored to make it a five-point game at 54-49.
Following another Lancer timeout, however, Lane and Allen each ripped the nets with three-pointers to suddenly balloon the Longwood lead to 11. Another Lane trey a minute later gave the Lancers their largest lead of the night at 65-51 with just under 10 minutes on the clock.
Dartmouth kept within striking distance by finding its stroke at the foul line, and when Boudreaux hit two free throws with little more than six minutes remaining, the Big Green were within single digits once again. Boudreaux followed that with his lone trifecta of the night, whittling the lead down to five at 72-67.
Longwood kept the Green at arm's length and was still up seven points with one minute to go. The Lancers, which two years ago rallied from a seven-point deficit against Dartmouth in the final minute to win by one, may have had that comeback in the back of their mind as they missed the front end of a one-and-one three times. Sistare and Smith, meanwhile, both scored on layups to make it a one-possession game at 78-75 with 32.5 seconds left.
Walton was up to the task down the stretch, however, scoring six straight points on four foul shots and a layup to beat the press, and Longwood survived to claim its first win over a Division I opponent this season.
Dartmouth held the edge on the glass, 33-30, and took 10 more free throws in the game while hitting a higher percentage of field goals (55.8 percent to 49.2). Longwood, on the other hand, had those 12 three-pointers to fall back on and converted 14-of-18 (.778) at the charity stripe compared to just 17-of-28 (.607) for the Big Green.
Dartmouth will play its third game in five days when it travels to Old Dominion (3-2) on Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. tip. The game will be streamed live on CUSA.tv. All five of the Monarchs games have been decided by single digits, including an overtime loss to 10th-ranked Louisville in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Notes: Dartmouth has lost four straight to open a season for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign … Boudreaux has led the Big Green in rebounding of 16 straight games … the 55.8 percent shooting performance was the best for Dartmouth against a Division I team since draining 60.4 percent in an 84-71 win at Columbia on Feb. 27, 2015 … the Green are now 4-2 all-time against Longwood (all in the last six seasons). In its only other loss to the Lancers, Dartmouth shot 56.3 percent from the floor.
