WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to William & Mary, 63-50 in Williamsburg, Virginia on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Big Green drop to 2-4, while the Tribe improve to 5-1.
Juniors Kate Letkewicz and Emily Slagle led the Big Green with 11 points a piece, while freshman Annie McKenna poured in eight points in the 13 minutes she saw on the floor. William & Mary also had a pair of players finish the night in double figures in scoring as Marlena Tremba led the Tribe with her 16 points. William & Mary was able to capitalize on Dartmouth's turnover troubles, scoring 25 points off of giveaways.
“We had a tough time in Virginia, but it's part of the schedule,” Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach, Belle Koclanes said. “We're not playing together and the only way our group is going to be a great basketball team is if we play together. It's really about us right now. Old Dominion was a good team. William and Mary was a good team, that's why they're on the schedule, to challenge us. As frustrating as it is in the moment, in the big picture we can take these lessons forward with us in Ivy League play.”
Dartmouth established an early lead in the first after McKenna drained a wide open three, giving her team a 10-6 advantage. Toward the end of the quarter, the Tribe went on an 11-2 run after a trio of three-pointers. In the opening minutes of the second, the Big Green closed the deficit after a layup by Slagle and a pair of free throws by Olivia Smith, but William and Mary would continue to hit shots and keep the pressure on Dartmouth's defense.
The Tribe closed the first half with a 10-3 run before taking a 10-point lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
The Big Green needed a solid start to the second half, but could not find it, as William & Mary went on to outscore Dartmouth, 16-6 to put the game out of reach. The Big Green would go on to win the fourth quarter by an 18-11 margin, but it was too late to mount any sort of a late game comeback.
“We're looking for some type of consistency right now,” Koclanes said. “We're trying to figure out the best lineups right now and we're going to play together. I care about effort. Whenever you see Dartmouth women's basketball play, you want to see five players out there playing as one with all out effort and enthusiasm.”
Dartmouth will remain on the road next week with a pair of games in New England. On Wednesday the Big Green travel to Boston University before playing at Maine on Dec. 10.
