BOSTON, Mass. – Behind a strong defensive effort, the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Boston University, 61-49, in Case Gym on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 3-4, while the Terriers fall to 1-8.
Three Dartmouth players ended the night with double-digit point totals, as Kate Letkewicz scored 17 and grabbed 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the 2016-17 campaign.
Isalys “Ice” Quinones continued her solid play, setting a career high with 14 points in the 36 minutes of time she saw on the floor. Fanni Szabo got back on track with 10 points in a solid performance for the senior. Belle Koclanes, Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach said she is happy with the progression of this evening's top scorers.
“Ice and Kate are important parts of our team and they're progressing every single day. They're working hard in practice and are earning their time. They're competitive kids and they are really hard on themselves and that's what makes them really fun to coach. They want to be better and that's what I love about them.”
The Big Green came out strong in the first, but BU showed poise early after completing a 9-2 run. A three by Fanni Szabo kept Dartmouth within a possession by the end of the opening quarter.
In the second, the Big Green retook the lead for good with five minutes to play after a couple of free throws by Amber Mixon. Dartmouth continued to add to its advantage before the end of the half, taking a 31-25 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Terriers came out shooting the ball poorly in the third, which the Big Green were quickly able to capitalize on. Dartmouth put the game out of reach with a dominant 11-2 run that spanned over six minutes.
“It was our defensive effort today that earned us the victory,” Koclanes said. “It was a total team effort. We knew heading into today we needed to stop Sophie Beaudry and Sarah Hope. We had eight or nine stops in a row and now moving forward its about getting those stops and turning them into points.”
The Big Green's defense held in the fourth as BU attempted to cut the deficit to single digits, but Dartmouth was able to drain four foul shots in the final minutes to clinch the team's third victory of the season.
The Big Green return to action this Saturday when Dartmouth travels to Maine at 1 p.m.
