First Victory Proving Evasive
• Dartmouth, suffering through its worst start to a season in nearly 50 years, looks to end its nine-game skid at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday.
• The last time the Big Green dropped their first nine games was in 1967-68. The good news for head coach David McLaughlin is that team was guided by college basketball legend Dave Gavitt.
• For the second straight game, Dartmouth held a lead with a minute to play, only to fall short. This time Hartford outscored the Green over the final 60 seconds, 6-1, to pull out a 70-66 victory.
• Evan Boudreaux, the Ivy League's second-leading scorer at 17.9 ppg and top rebounder at 8.6 rpg, matched a season high with 23 points, but was held to just four caroms, tying a career low and ending a streak of 20 straight games leading Dartmouth on the boards.
• But rebounding was not a problem for the Big Green as they held a decisive 36-21 advantage on the glass, led by freshman Ian Sistare with six.
• Guilien Smith, averaging 11.1 ppg, also scored in double figures with 14 points, including a three-pointer with 1:04 to play to give Dartmouth that one-point edge.
• Turnovers were the biggest culprit for the loss as the Big Green coughed the ball up 21 times, its most in over three years.
• The reserves have been quite efficient of late, hitting on 60 percent of their field goals (21-of-35) over the last three contests with Will Emery 5-of-7 and Wesley Dickinson 7-of-10.
Series vs. LIU Brooklyn
• The Blackbirds hold a 2-1 advantage against Dartmouth having won handily twice in the 1960s before the Big Green got some revenge last year with a 79-56 triumph.
• Miles Wright exploded for a career-high 39 points in the game last year, tying a Leede Arena record while hitting 13-of-22 field goals, including a stellar 7-of-9 three-pointers.
• Dartmouth is 10-12 all-time against current Northeast Conference schools, with this the lone game scheduled this season.
Scouting the Blackbirds
• LIU Brooklyn won six of its first seven contests, but has since dropped three of four. The lone win, however, was a one-point triumph over St. John's.
• Last time out the Blackbirds lost at Minnesota, 76-66, as Iverson Fleming put up 24 points on the strength of his 6-of-8 performance behind the arc.
• While Fleming is second on the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg, 6-7 forward Jerome Frink tallies 16.9 ppg while also grabbing 8.3 rpg to lead the squad.
• Another 6-7 forward, Nura Zanna, also is a big help on the boards at 7.1 per game as LIU Brooklyn hauls in nearly five more per game than its opponents.
• As a team the Blackbirds shoot 37 percent from distance with Fleming (17-of-40, .425) and Jashaun Agosto (13-of-30, .433) the only players averaging even one triple per game.
• Fleming is also active on the defensive end with 20 steals, nearly double that of any teammate.
• Agosto is a third player scoring in double figures (11.5) to go with a team-high 30 assists.
• LIU Brooklyn shoots over 70 percent at the foul line, led by Raiquan Clark (.880) with Fleming (.826) and Agosto (.762) accurate shooters as well.
• Jack Perri (Bentley '98) is in his fifth season as LIU Brooklyn's head coach after serving seven as an assistant. He led the Blackbirds to a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in his first year at the helm and sports a 64-71 record with them and a 84-80 record as a head coach overall.

Good Company
With the 70-66 loss at Hartford on Dec. 13, Dartmouth has lost its first nine games of the season for the first time in nearly 50 years. The 1967-68 Big Green also lost nine straight before turning their season around with an overtime victory over Penn. Head coach David McLaughlin is in good company, however, as the coach of that squad was none other than college basketball legend Dave Gavitt. And the previous coach to lose at least nine straight at the start of a season was none other than Alvin “Doggie” Julian, who took Dartmouth to the NCAA Tournament twice and Holy Cross to an NCAA title.
No Do-Over On Turnovers
In the 70-66 loss at Hartford on Dec. 13, Dartmouth turned the ball over 21 times, its most miscues since coughing the ball up 22 times against Colby-Sawyer on Jan. 17, 2013. Oddly enough, the Big Green won that game by 38 points, and had won three straight games when giving the ball away more than 20 times in a game. The last team to beat Dartmouth in such a contest was Yale on the final weekend of the 2008-09 season.
Evan Almighty
After earning the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a spot on the USBWA All-District I Team last year, Evan Boudreaux is putting together quite the sequel thus far. The 6-8 forward has led the team in both scoring in each of the first nine contests, and in rebounding the first eight. At Hartford, he snared just four boards — matching a career low — despite the fact that Dartmouth owned a 36-21 advantage on the glass. That ended a streak of 20 straight games leading the team in rebounding in which he has played. He enters this game leading the league in rebounding at 8.6 ppg and second in scoring at 17.9 ppg.
Board Scores
The rebounding at Hartford has been part of a trend lately as Dartmouth has outrebounded its opponent in three of the last four games. First the Green had 33 caroms at Boston College, which managed just 27, then a week ago had a season-high 39 boards compared to 34 for Maine, followed by the 36-21 advantage against the Hawks. Last year Dartmouth had seven games in which it had at least 10 more rebounds than its opponent.
Boudreaux Boudreaux Golly
Double the name for Evan Boudreaux double-doubles. The sophomore posted 19 points and 12 rebounds against Maine for his second straight double-double, fourth of the season and 14th of his career. His 10 last year were the most by a Dartmouth player in 23 years, and the most in a career over the last 25 years is 21 by Ian McGinnis '01.
Getting Guilien With It
Sophomore Guilien Smith, after scoring in double figures in his first four games, had failed to get at least 10 in each of the next three. Against Maine he finally topped the figure with 12 points, plus added a career-high six rebounds, then followed that up with 14 more points at Hartford.
Si-Stare-Way to Heaven
If heaven is doing a bit of everything on the basketball court, freshman Ian Sistare is on his way. The rookie has been one of the team's top contributors off the bench, with his performance against Hartford indicative of his play. He led the team with six rebounds and matched senior Mike Fleming with a team-high three assists, plus chipped in eight points. For the season he is second on the squad in assists and steals, plus third in rebounds.
Reserves Deserve Praise
Dartmouth may not have a prolific scoring bench, but it has been efficient, especially over the past five games. Big Green players not in the starting lineup have shot 54.7 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from long range and 75 percent at the foul line to contribute 20.6 ppg. Wesley Dickinson has been a big part of the accurate crew, hitting 12-of-17 (.706) field goals over the last five games, plus tossed in a season-high 10 points at Vermont to tie for the team lead. For his career, Dickinson is a 55.8 percent shooter.
