All-Time Series vs. Brown: Big Green lead 78-73
Last Meeting vs. Bears March 6, 2015 — Dartmouth 75, Brown 69
Yale, Brown in Town
• Dartmouth, having lost four straight Ivy games, will get a shot at ending the skid against the league-leading Yale Bulldogs, who have won 10 straight, and Brown, winners of two of its last three.
• It was against Yale last year in the regular-season finale that the Big Green pulled off a last-second, 59-58 victory to not only propel themselves to a postseason berth in the CIT, but deny the Bulldogs an outright conference crown which eventually kept Yale out of the NCAA Tournament.
• This past weekend, Dartmouth dropped games at Penn and Princeton, although the Green held a five-point lead with 5:18 to play at The Palestra.
• Freshman Evan Boudreaux led Dartmouth in both scoring and rebounding for the fifth straight game, earning Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for a seventh time.
• Surging of late has been guard Taylor Johnson. The sophomore scored 16 against the Quakers and 13 more at Princeton, the first time he had scored in double figures in consecutive games.
• Senior Connor Boehm, who scored his 1,000th point two weeks ago, earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District I Team.
Series vs. Yale
• Dartmouth has played the Bulldogs 206 times entering this contest. Yale has the advantage with a 108-98 mark against the Big Green.
• In the 59-58 victory last year at Leede, Tommy Carpenter came off the bench to lead Dartmouth with 13 points, while Gabas Maldunas hit the game-winner in the final second to finish with 10.
• Miles Wright enjoyed his first go-round against the Bulldogs, averaging 16 points while shooting 50 percent overall and grabbing eight total steals.
• The Big Green are 15-12 all-time against the Bulldogs at Leede Arena.
• Yale has won 24 of the last 30 meetings.
• Head coach Paul Cormier is 12-15 all-time against the Bulldogs, 10-14 while at Dartmouth.
Scouting the Bulldogs
• League-leading Yale comes to Leede Arena on a 10-game win streak, their longest in nearly 60 years.
• Yale has outscored their opposition by an average of 12.5 points this season, and an even better 17.5 points in league games while sporting a 6-0 mark.
• Player of the Year favorite Justin Sears leads a formidable frontcourt, averaging 15.9 points and 6.8 rebounds while Brandon Sherrod, who set an NCAA record by hitting 30 straight field goals, is providing 18.3 points and 7.8 boards in the six league games while shooting 77.6 percent.
• The backcourt is no slouch with Makai Mason (15.5 ppg, 4.0 apg, 38.7 three-point pct.) and Jack Montague (9.7 ppg, 3.0 apg, 39.8 three-point pct.)
• Yale leads the country in rebound margin (+12.4), but struggles at the foul line (.655) and has a tendency to turn the ball over (14.5 per game).
• Head coach James Jones (Albany '86) is the longest tenured head coach in the Ivy League, now in his 16th year with an overall record of 246-237 and shares of Ivy titles in 2001-02 and last year.
Series vs. Brown
• While the Bears have won 13 of the last 17 and 22 of 30 against Dartmouth, the Big Green still hold the advantage in the all-time series, 78-73.
• Brown held off Dartmouth in the first meeting last year, 67-64, but then let a 24-point lead slip away at Leede Arena as the Green rallied for a 75-69 victory behind 17 points from Malik Gill and a double-double from Connor Boehm.
• Boehm has enjoyed playing the Bears over the years, averaging 11.0 points and 6.2 rebounds, including a 22-point output in a win in 2013-14.
• Since Leede Arena opened in 1987, Dartmouth has won 19 of the 28 contests against Brown.
• Head coach Paul Cormier is 13-13 against Brown in his head coaching career, 11-13 at Dartmouth.
Scouting the Bears
• Brown has endured perhaps the toughest schedule to start the Ivy League season with four of their first six games against the top three teams, including their travel partner — Yale — twice.
• The Bears have not fared well outside of the Pizzitola Sports Center having won just once on the road, that at Bryant back in early December.
• Cedric Kuakumensah, the Ivy League's all-time leading shot blocker, nearly averages a double-double with 13.7 points and 9.8 rebounds.
• Four of the five starters are all three-point threats, especially J.R. Hobbie with his 2.7 made triples per game at just over 40 percent, and in Ivy games the team has been red hot from the outside, drilling 45.4 percent from long range.
• Point guard Tavon Blackmon runs the offense with his league-leading 5.5 assists per game while chipping in 12.6 points to boot.
• Steven Spieth, younger brother of pro golfer Jordan Spieth, does just about everything with averages of 11.6 points and 7.5 rebounds to go with 3.6 assists and an 86.4 free throw percentage.
• Brown alum Mike Martin '04 is in his fourth season at the helm, sporting a 48-60 record. He spent a year at his alma mater as an assistant before serving on the staff at Penn for six seasons.
Relive the Wild Weekend
Big Green fans will certainly remember the last time Yale and Brown came to town. The two were the final opponents of the 2014-15 season with Dartmouth riding a three-game win streak and needing a sweep to reach .500 overall and in league play to be postseason eligible. Well, the Bears started the game on a 12-0 run, took a 13-point lead into halftime and extended their advantage to 24 with just under 14 minutes to play. The rest of the game belonged to the Big Green, outscoring Brown 49-19 to close out a six-point win, 75-69.
Yale then came to Hanover in need of a win to win the Ivy League crown outright and secure its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1962. Dartmouth trailed for all but 44 seconds, but that was enough as Gabas Maldunas hit a layup in the final second to deny the Bulldogs and allow the Green to play in the postseason for the first time since 1959.
Boudreaux Boudreaux Golly!
I just can't stop using this note, but I'm going to have to break it down into sections because there's too much to say about freshman Evan Boudreaux.
• Last week he was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the seventh time this season, the most ever by a Big Green player and one shy of tying the league record.
• Boudreaux has led Dartmouth in scoring each of the last seven games, in rebounding the last five.
• For the season, he has topped the team in scoring 13 times and on the boards 14 times.
• His six double-doubles this season are the most by a Big Green player since Alex Barnett '09 recorded six in the 2007-08 campaign (the year before he earned Ivy League Player of the Year).
• His 16.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, as well as free throw percentage (.819), all rank third in the Ivy League.
• In Ivy games, he is second with 20.3 ppg, and first with 10.5 rpg and free throw accuracy at 90 pct.
Houses of Horrors
The trip to Penn and Princeton has rarely been kind to Dartmouth throughout the years, and this year was no exception. Since the Big Green's last Ivy League title in 1959, they have won just four games at The Palestra against the Quakers. In that same time span, Dartmouth has just four wins at Princeton and is 3-44 at Jadwin Gym. Only once have the Green won both games, that coming in the 2008-09 season.
Taylor-Made Emergence
Sophomore Taylor Johnson showed off his offensive skills at Penn and Princeton on Feb. 5-6, averaging 14.5 points in the two games while shooting 10-of-17 (.588) from the floor. He first tallied a career-high 16 against the Quakers before following up with 13 more the next night versus the Tigers. It marked the first time he had posted double figures in consecutive games
Top Freshman Scorers
Boudreaux is 11th nationally in scoring among freshmen (16.9 ppg), which would be the highest ever for a Big Green freshman, besting Dartmouth legend Ed Leede who tallied 16.5 ppg in a 14-game schedule in 1944-45. Only one Ivy League freshman (since the league was formed in 1956) have ever averaged more in a season — Brown's Earl Hunt in 1999-2000 (17.0), though Cornell's Matt Morgan (18.6) is currently ahead of Boudreaux as well.
Making the Most of Freebies
Dartmouth is one of the most adept teams in the Ivy League at getting to the free throw line this year, averaging 21.6 attempts per game (only Columbia and Yale take more). But the Big Green also have been the most accurate at the charity stripe at 72.9 percent, just ahead of the Lions and Brown at 71.9. It helps to have Evan Boudreaux shooting 81.9 percent with more freebies made (104) than any three teammates combined.
Man of Steal
Malik Gill has led Dartmouth in steals every year he has been in Hanover, despite ranking anywhere from sixth to ninth on the team in minutes. He finished second in the Ivy League as a freshman with 50 steals, then had 32 the following season. He was nearly beaten out last year by Miles Wright, who had 42 thefts, but Gill one-upped him with 43. His 159 career swipes tie him for fourth on the Big Green all-time list.
