DALLAS, Texas – The No. 35 Dartmouth men's tennis team narrowly fell to No. 44 SMU, 4-3, at Turpin Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green fell to 11-5, while the Mustangs improved to 14-5.
SMU won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. At No. 2, junior George Wall and senior Brendan Tannenbaum were leading Nate Lammons and Arkadijs Slobodkins, 5-4, when the match went unfinished.
Dartmouth tied the score at one when Fliegner defeated Kerner by scores of 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 position and Wall put the Green ahead by taking down Butler, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3. Wins at No. 5 and No. 2 by the Mustangs gave the lead back to the home team, making it 3-2 in favor of SMU.
With just two courts still playing, senior Dovydas Sakinis – who is ranked 55th in the ITA National Rankings – defeated Hunter Johnson in three sets at the No. 1 position, dropping the first set, 6-4, before taking the next two by the same scores to tie things at three-all.
The match came down to freshman Eddie Grabill and Yates Johnson at No. 6. Johnson won the first set, 6-3, but Grabill took the second set, 7-6(11-9). In the ever-important third set, Johnson walked away with the victory by a score of 6-3 to end the match.
