HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team split the final two games of a four-game series with Yale 1-0 and 6-1 in Hanover on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 26-12, 14-2 in the Ivy League, while the Bulldogs are 15-28-1, 7-9 in conference play.
Dartmouth had a chance to clinch at least a share of the North Division crown this weekend, but the Big Green will have to wait one more week when they play a home-and-home series with Harvard. Game one at the Dartmouth Softball Park featured a rematch of yesterday's starters in the circle, as senior Morgan McCalmon took the ball for the Big Green and Lindsay Efflandt got the nod for Yale.
McCalmon pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and one unearned run for the loss which dropped the Norman Oklahoma native to 15-4 on the year.
After a scoreless first and second, the Bulldogs got the lone run of the ball game when Shelby Kennedy reached on an error which plated Sydney Glover who singled two batters prior. Dartmouth tried to respond in the fourth when senior Kelsey Miller led off with a double, but the following three Big Green batters were retired in order.
Yale nearly added to its one run lead in the fifth, but the Bulldogs stranded two runners when Allison Skinner grounded out to second to end the inning. After a scoreless sixth, Dartmouth had one last chance to tie or win the game, but the Big Green could not spark a late-game rally.
In Game 2, Dartmouth sent sophomore Breanna Ethridge to the circle, where she picked up her 10th victory of the season. Ethridge tossed five innings, allowing just three hits and two walks, with three strikeouts.
The Big Green bats came alive with eight hits, as Dartmouth jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Katie McEachern led off with a double to right field and scored when junior Karen Chaw singled up the middle. Junior Maddie Damore kept the inning alive with a single which moved Chaw over to second. Freshman Kassidy Williams was the next batter and smacked a double, which scored two runs and gave the home team a 3-0 lead. With nobody out, junior Chloe Madill hit a sacrifice fly to right field as Williams came home to score for the 4-0 lead.
After a scoreless third, the Big Green added to its advantage when Williams hit a triple to left, which set up Madill for a two-run homer. Madill's long ball was her second of the season to put her team up 6-0.
Freshman Lauren Stone came in to pitch in the sixth giving up a single before retiring the next three batters. In the top of the seventh, Yale loaded the bases and scored its first run of the game when Laina Do reached first on a fielder's choice. With one out and runners at the corners, Stone settled in and got Glover to pop up to McEachern and Brittany Labbadia to ground out to end the game, earning her third save of the year.
Dartmouth returns to the diamond to conclude the regular season next weekend with two games in Cambridge on Saturday before wrapping up the series with two games at home on Sunday.
