SATURDAY'S GAME
The Dartmouth women's lacrosse team is set to take on Cornell Saturday in Ithaca. The Big Green and Big Red square off at noon at Schoellkopf Field.
LAST TIME OUT
Dartmouth is coming off a 17-9 loss at the hands of Harvard in Cambridge last Saturday. Errors at critical times cost the Big Green a shot at the comeback as the Crimson put together several runs to distance themselves from the visitors. The Crimson were led by Julia Glynn and her remarkable 10-point performance on six goals and four assists, a performance that helped Glynn earn Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week recognition.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red come into Saturday's game with just one loss on their 2016 resume: a 17-9 defeat in their last outing against unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Maryland last Saturday in College Park. Cornell is now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in Ivy League play, sitting atop the conference standings with one more win than Princeton (2-0). Prior to the loss against the Terps, Cornell was off to its best start in program history. A balanced scoring attack led by Olivia Mattyasovsky and Emily Tripodi (both with 19 points) and anchored defensively by goalkeeper Renee Poullott have put the Red in the drivers seat for the Ancient Eight crown midway through the conference season. In the last five games, Mattyasovsky has 13 goals, while Tripodi has 11 assists as both have 13 total points.
AGAINST THE BIG RED
Dartmouth owns a commanding 31-7 all-time edge in the series with Cornell thanks to last season's 10-9 overtime win in Hanover. The Green have won 8-of-9 from the Red dating back to the 2009 season, including a pair of Ivy League Tournament semifinal victories in 2010 and 2012. Cornell's lone win in that stretch was an 11-10 double-overtime contest in 2014 in Ithaca. Despite losing, Dartmouth battled back with a pair of goals in the final minute of the first OT to force the second frame in a wild back-and-forth game.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
With another three tallies against the Crimson, Jaclyn Leto continues to lead all Ivy League players in goals this season. The two-time First Team All-Ivy player now has 35 goals through nine games, and is just eight shy of her career-high of 43 set last season in 14 contests. Leto also leads the conference with 12 free-position goals after a 2-for-3 day in Cambridge.
TWO FOR BREW
Freshman Campbell Brewer scored two goals in the loss at Harvard. For Brewer, it marked the first multi-goal effort of her career as she entered the game with just a goal in the season opener vs. UMass Lowell on Feb. 20 to her credit.
PLAYS OF THE WEEK
This spring, DartmouthSports.com has started to feature the top plays from Big Green student-athletes in a new plays of the week segment. Kathryn Giroux's second-half goal against the Crimson on a great centering feed from senior Campbell Probert made the cut in this week's edition.
TURNAROUND
Despite the loss in their most recent outing, the Big Green and their coaching staff have to be pleased at where they stand through nine games of the 2016 campaign. Dartmouth was 0-9 to start 2015, the longest stretch without a win in program history. With a team that features a wealth of young talent who are seeing major minutes, a 5-4 mark in the same number of contests shows the program heading back in the right direction.
GET THE BALL BACK
Harvard was just the second team all season to pick up more draw controls against Dartmouth. That figure notwithstanding, the Green and White lead all Ivy programs with 12.33 per game this season.
