SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Dartmouth sailing team finished seventh at the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association Laser Performance Team Race National Championship, improving four spots from their day one finish of 11th.
The Big Green went 11-11 on the third and final day of the tournament at the San Diego Yacht Club. Ivy League foe Yale claimed its fourth consecutive Walter Wood Trophy, as the Bulldogs went 21-4 to win the National Championship. The last team to win four ICSA Team Race National Championships was Tufts in 1996.
Georgetown finished second at 19-6 and St. Mary's College took third at 18-7. Boston College and the College of Charleston rounded out the top five at 17-8 and 15-7 respectively.
Monday brought cloudy conditions with light winds when the boats hit the water for the 10:30 a.m. start. The breeze picked up a bit in the afternoon to 12 knots under sunnier skies with temperatures in the mid 60s.
Dartmouth was represented in the Golden State by Robert Floyd, Charles Lalumiere, Christopher Williford, Madeline Cooney, Rebecca McElvain and Abigail Rohman. The Big Green's solid day on the water was highlighted by victories over Charleston, Stanford and Brown.
Dartmouth will return to the San Diego Yacht Club for one final National Championship regatta, when the Big Green compete in the Gill Coed National Championship. The semifinal round will begin tomorrow and conclude on June 1, as the final round takes place on June 2-3.
