HANOVER, N.H. – This past weekend, the open and women's sailing teams began the fall season at two regattas, earning second at the Toni Deutsch Trophy and fifth at the Harry Anderson Torphy.
At the Toni Deutsch Trophy, the A Division posted 82 points while the B Division posted the lowest score, 52 total points, for a combined 134 points and a second-place finish.
The Big Green started in fourth place, posting top-ten finishes through the first four races. Following an 11th place finish in the third A Division race, Dartmouth kicked into another gear, going on to earn three straight first place finishing positions to bump them into second place.
Five of their next six races were top five finishes, including first place finishes in the sixth A Division race and seventh B Division race, briefly putting the Big Green in first place.
The A Division had back-to-back 11th place finishes before the Big Green rounded out the final 12 races with top ten finishes across both divisions to earn second place, only nine points behind the winner, Roger Williams.
At the Harry Anderson Trophy, the Big Green won the A Division with only 20 total points, three less than the second place A Division team Harvard, while the B Division posted 61 points for a team fifth-place finish with 81 total points.
All six of the A Division races were top ten finishes, two first place finishing positions, two second place finishing positions, and a fourth and tenth place finish as well.
The B Division earned top ten finishing positions in half their races, collecting fifth, ninth, and tenth place finishing positions.
The Big Green were in first place following the second A Division race and briefly pulled into second place after the fourth A Division race, but ultimately, finished fifth overall.
Dartmouth sailing will return to action next weekend at five regattas, three team regattas and two single regattas. Both the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Open and Women's Singlehanded Championships will be held on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13 next week.
The rest of the team will compete at three regattas, the Hatch Brown Trophy hosted by MIT, the Regis Trophy hosted by Harvard, and the Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin.
