PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Dartmouth volleyball team fought to send the match to a fifth set, but ultimately fell to Penn, 3-2, (25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 13-25, 11-15) at the Palestra on Friday evening. The Big Green dipped to 6-6 and 0-2 in Ivy League play, while the Quakers improved to 6-8 and 1-1 in conference action.
The last time Dartmouth won two sets against Penn was on Oct. 29, 2011.
Senior Emily Astarita had a double-double with her 12 kills and 12 digs, while classmate Danielle Glinka and sophomore Zoe Leonard both ended the night with 18 digs.
“I thought we came prepared and played well in game one and three,” head coach Gilad Doron said. “We just couldn't come up with a few plays when we needed for a win. I liked our team effort trying to win here tonight and we definitely improved from last week. Now we have a short turnaround and will be ready for another battle at Princeton tomorrow.
Dartmouth opened the first set with a 2-0 lead courtesy of a kill by senior Kaira Lujan and an ace by sophomore Sierra Lyle and would hold on to that lead for the majority of the set. When Penn tied things at 4-4, the Green went on a 14-4 run to make it 18-8 in their favor. The home team ended up making it a closer set, but an error by the Quakers ended it before they were able to catch up (25-18).
There were seven ties at the beginning of the second set. With the Big Green leading, 15-13, the Quakers scored seven consecutive points to snatch the lead away (20-15). The two teams traded points and Dartmouth got within three following a Lujan kill (23-20), but two more points on the other side of the net gave Penn its first victory.
The Big Green took seven of the first 10 points in the third set following kills by Astarita (2), junior Sara Lindquist (1), Glinka (1), aces by Leonard (2) and a Quaker error. Penn tied the score a few times, the last of which being after a four-point run (17-17). From there, Dartmouth had a 6-1 run of its own to put a second win within reach (23-18). The Quakers almost got close enough to make an impact on the outcome of the set, but a Penn error put Dartmouth up, 2-1 (25-22).
The Quakers dominated the fourth set. With Penn ahead, 15-12, the home team scored nine straight points to make it game point (24-12). A Quaker error gave one more point to the Big Green, but a Penn kill sent the match to a fifth set.
The fifth started in the Quakers' favor (5-1), but the Green were quick to make it a close set. Following kills by Astarita (1) and Kornfeind (1) and a pair of Penn errors, the score was tied at six-all. Four more ties later and, after an Astarita kill, the score was 10-10. The Quakers won the next four points to get to match point and, although Lujan snuck in one last kill, Penn shut the set down immediately afterwards.
Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday with a 5 p.m. match against Princeton.
