PRINCETON, N.J. – The day after taking its match to five sets against Penn, the Dartmouth volleyball team fell to Princeton, 3-0 (18-25, 16-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 6-7 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play, while the Tigers improved to 9-3 and 3-0.
Senior Kaira Lujan led Dartmouth with nine kills, while both sophomore Zoe Leonard and freshman Corinne Cox had 16 assists apiece. Sophomore Jordan Cornwell had 13 digs and two of the team's four service aces.
"I thought we faced a more physical team, but we found ways to get stronger and we fought hard until the end," head coach Gilad Doron said. "It is a bit of a disappointing weekend from a record stand point, but we learned more about what we needed to do as a unit to play better next weekend. I am proud of our players' response and attitude and I know we are very determined to play better next weekend."
As they consistently do, the Green won the first point, this time off a kill by senior Danielle Glinka. The Tigers managed to pull ahead rather quickly and soon had a 12-4 advantage. Dartmouth got the next three points off an error by the opponent and a kill and ace by senior Emily Astarita to slightly close the gap (12-7). Dartmouth held the home team at match point to get one more kill by classmate Molly Kornfeind, but the Tigers got their final point right afterwards (25-18).
Princeton won the first three points of the second set, but a Glinka kill put Dartmouth on the board. The Big Green closed the gap and, after a kill apiece by Glinka and Astarita, trailed by just one (11-10). For the next few points, Dartmouth remained directly behind Princeton (15-14) until six straight by the Tigers gave them a definitive lead (21-14). While holding Princeton at match point, junior Sara Lindquist got in a kill, but a kill on the other side of the net gave set two to the home team (25-16).
The first three points of the third set went in Princeton's direction but, a few minutes later, Dartmouth had tied the score at six-all following kills by Lujan (2) and Lindquist (1), aces by Cornwell (2) and a Tiger error. Princeton managed to pull away a few times, but Dartmouth would always close the gap. With the Green trailing by one (14-13), the Tigers won five straight points to make it a 19-13 set. Dartmouth got as close as four points behind (22-18), but were allowed just one more point off a Princeton error but the match was ended.
Dartmouth will return to action next weekend when they take on Yale and Brown on the road.
