ITHACA, N.Y. — Dartmouth sophomore forward Evan Boudreaux led all players with 23 points and 14 rebounds, but host Cornell (6-13, 2-2 Ivy) put four players in double figures led by Matt Morgan's 22 and led wire-to-wire to defeat the Big Green (3-14, 0-4 Ivy) on Saturday night at Newman Arena, 75-62.
Morgan was 8-of-17 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers while going 4-of-5 at the line, plus grabbed seven rebounds to tie Stone Gettings for the team lead. Gettings also had 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, complementing Will Bathurst's 16 thanks to three triples. Also reaching double digits was Troy Whiteside with 11 as the Big Red shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60) for the game and 8-of-23 (.348) from downtown.
Dartmouth fell behind by 12 in the first half due to some cold shooting, hitting just 9-of-28 (.321) and 1-of-9 (.111) from long range over the first 20 minutes. While the shots started to fall in the second stanza, also found more success inside to counter the Big Green every step of the way. For the game, Dartmouth managed to shoot 40.7 percent (24-of-59), but just 19.0 percent (4-of-21) from behind the arc.
The Big Red jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Boudreaux scored on consecutive possessions. The next eight Big Green points came courtesy of freshman Brendan Barry, including a three-pointer that had Dartmouth within one point (10-9) for the only time all night. Whiteside answered Barry's trey with one of his own, allowing Cornell to keep a three-point edge at 15-12 at the end of Barry's spree, which accounted for all of his scoring in the game.
Twice the Green closed the gap to two points, first on a Miles Wright layup, then another by freshman Ian Sistare. But two quick Big Red trifectas by JoJo Fallas and Bathurst quickly ballooned the lead to eight at 26-18. A Bathurst layup two minutes later gave Cornell its first double-digit advantage at 30-20, and Morgan rained down a long three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to send the hosts to a 35-23 lead at the intermission.
The first nine minutes of the second half was a back-and-forth affair with Cornell's lead oscillating between eight and 12 points. Dartmouth finally whittled the deficit to seven at 52-45 when junior Taylor Johnson swished a triple with 10:34 to play. After two Whiteside free throws, Johnson and Boudreaux each scored on layups to make it a 54-49 game with 8:33 to play.
A quick 7-1 spurt, however, boosted the lead back to 11. The capper to the run came when Gettings' was fouled going to the basket, but before his hands got above his waist. Yet the ball somehow squirted out, softly bounded off the rim and backboard before falling through the hoop. His free throw finished off the three-point play and summed up the game for the Big Green.
Four times Dartmouth was able to get back within eight points, but never any closer as the Big Red sank 6-of-7 free throws in the final 2:30.
After committing a season-high 21 turnovers in the loss at Columbia last night, Dartmouth seemed to be on pace for that again with 10 miscues in the opening half. But the Big Green got a handle on the ball after the break, losing the ball just twice more.
Boudreaux finished the game hitting 8-of-16 field goals but struggled at the line a bit, converting 7-of-12. His 14 rebounds equaled a season high as Dartmouth matched the Big Red on the glass with 37 boards apiece.
The Big Green return to Leede Arena next weekend when they host Princeton (10-6, 3-0 Ivy) and Penn (7-9, 0-3 Ivy) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network, while the game against the Quakers will also be shown on ESPN3.
Notes: In three career games against Cornell, Boudreaux is averaging 23 points and 16 rebounds a game … Dartmouth has dropped five straight to start the new year after winning three in a row at the end of the 2016.
