HANOVER, N.H. — Cornell's Matt Morgan and Dartmouth's Evan Boudreaux engaged in a scoring battle on Friday night at Leede Arena with Morgan finishing on top as the Big Red claimed a 69-65 victory over the host Big Green. Morgan finished the game with 28 points on 9-of-15 field goals, and Stone Gettings registered 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cornell (7-17, 3-6 Ivy) to a season sweep of Dartmouth (5-17, 2-7 Ivy).
Boudreaux matched his career high with 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including three three-pointers for the Big Green, plus snared a team-high eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Sophomore Guilien Smith added 15 points to the Dartmouth cause as well.
Freshman Ian Carter converted a pair of free throws with 6:27 to play, tying the game for what turned out to be the last time at 53 apiece. Cornell answered with two foul shots by Robert Hatter and two more by Gettings for a four-point lead. As the Big Green misfired on two long-range attempts, Morgan drove for a contested layup and sank two freebies to double the Big Red advantage to their largest of the night at eight points, 61-53, with 4:33 on the clock.
After Boudreaux scored four straight points, Cornell responded with four of its own to maintain the eight-point edge. But senior Wesley Dickinson went up and under for a reverse layup, Boudreaux drilled his final triple of the night and Smith sank the second of two foul shots to bring Dartmouth within two, 65-63, with 58 seconds to go.
The Big Green defense forced Cornell to fire off a wild three-pointer before the shot clock expired, but Troy Whiteside was able to corral the offensive rebound and force Dartmouth to foul. Morgan proceeded to knock down both free throws with 22.2 seconds showing, then did it again after a three-point attempt was off the mark, sealing the victory.
The game got off to a sluggish start before Cornell opened up a 13-8 lead with five different players contributing baskets. While Smith scored Dartmouth's first points of the night by driving the baseline for a layup, Boudreaux put up the next 11 Big Green points, the last five tying the game at 13. Freshman Brendan Barry then drove for a pair of layups to give the Big Green a nine-point run and a four-point lead.
The Big Red managed to knot the score at 21 before a Smith three-pointer and Boudreaux layup put Dartmouth up 26-21. But Cornell closed the half on a 10-4 spurt, capped by a Morgan three-pointer with 19 seconds until the intermission. The Big Green had an opportunity to take the lead when fouled with 1.3 ticks left, but both free throws were off the mark, leaving Cornell up at the half, 31-30.
In the second stanza, Dartmouth built up a lead as large as six at 44-38 thanks in part to a three-pointer by senior Mike Fleming, only to have the Big Red score six straight points, the last three on a long ball by Jack Gordon, and the game remained tight until Cornell took its eight-point lead.
The game was won at the foul line where the Big Red hit 19-of-23 (.826) attempts compared to just 11-of-17 (.647) for Dartmouth. The Big Green shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) overall and only 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from downtown, while Cornell hit 43.4 percent (23-of-53) from the floor and just 23.5 percent (4-of-17) on three-balls.
Dartmouth had a slight edge on the boards, 35-32, and neither team turned the ball over even 10 times.
Tomorrow night the Big Green will host Columbia (10-12, 4-5 Ivy) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network and simulcast on ESPN3 with Jay Burnham and Bob Lipman calling the action. Fans can also listen locally and around the world online to Brett Franklin and Jill Glessner on KOOL 93.9. Cornell travels to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take on Harvard (15-7, 7-2 Ivy) tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Notes: In four career games against Cornell, Boudreaux is averaging 24.0 points and 14.0 rebounds ... the series sweep is the first for either team since the Big Red won both games in the 2010-11 season.
