Big Green Drop 4-3 Heartbreaker to Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Dartmouth men's tennis dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center on Friday evening. The Big Green are now 2-3 on the season while the Gophers remain undefeated with a record of 6-0.

“That was a good fight from both teams all the way up and down the lineup tonight,” head coach Chris Drake said. “There were lots of close sets and close matches. Minnesota played some good tennis at the end to get the win. I saw improvement in some key areas for us tonight, and we will build on those things for our match on Sunday against Iowa.”

Minnesota got a win at the No. 1 doubles position, but it was Dartmouth that picked up the first point of the evening by taking the other two matches. At the No. 2 spot, junior Max Fliegner and senior George Wall had a 6-4 victory over Marino Alpeza and Eli Ogilvy, while freshman David Horneffer and senior Max Schmidt had a very close match against Stefan Millicevic and Jesse Sprinkel, defeating the Gophers, 7-6 (6-2).

Schmidt's 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 singles position made it 2-0 in the Big Green's favor, but the home team responded by winning at the No. 1 and 4 spots, making it a 2-2 match. Fliegner had a three-set victory over Felix Corwin at No. 2 to pull the Green ahead, if only for a little while, as a three-setter at the No. 5 spot went in Minnesota's favor and, once again, tied the score. With it all coming down to the No. 3 position, Horneffer and Millicevic both put up a fight in the three-set thriller, but it was the Gopher that claimed the win.

Dartmouth will play an 11 a.m. match against Iowa on Sunday.
