HILTON HEAD S.C. — Senior Jamie Susanin and sophomore Catharine Roddy had very strong rounds for the Dartmouth women's golf team on the first day of the Babs Steffens Invitational in DeLand, Florida, as Susanin shot a one-under 71 and Roddy even par. The duo's exceptional play helped the Big Green secure a piece of fourth place with a 16-over 304.
Leading the 11-team field is St. Leo, the seventh-ranked team in Division II, with a 298 (+10), four strokes ahead of Steson and Boston University. Xavier was able to match Dartmouth with a 304 to tie the Green for fourth.
Susanin finished the day in a tie atop the leaderboard, sharing it with Boston University's Zhangcheng Guo on the 5,907-yard course at Victoria Hills Golf Club. Starting on the 10th hole, the senior burst out of the gate with birdies on the first two holes. She was still at two-under when she reached the turn, then birdied the first hole to move to three-under. Bogeys on three of the next seven holes brought her back to even, but she rallied on the final hole with a birdie to gain a share of the lead.
Roddy, meanwhile, ended the day all alone in third with her 72. She also was on fire early with birdies on 10 and 12, but a double bogey on 16 and a bogey on 17 threatened to ruin her day. The sophomore fell to two-over after a bogey on four, but she found her stroke again with birdies on five and seven to get back to even.
The rest of the team had an up-and-down day with freshman Maddie Nelson shooting an 80 (+8), although she birdied the final hole on each nine. Junior Jessica Kittelberger struggled on her first nine at nine-over par, but composed herself on the second nine with three birdies to finish the round with an 81 (+9). Senior Tara Simmons also competed for the Big Green, posting birdies early on in the front nine, finished the day in a tie for 49th with an 11-over 83.
Dartmouth also sent the rest of its members to the tournament to compete as individuals. Completing the day with seven-over 79 was freshman Kristin Soh, while junior Isabelle Kane matched her classmate Kittleberger. Sharing a piece of 55th was sophomore Hana Bradshaw who finished at 13-over 85, and freshman Bethany Burns finished four strokes behind her.
The tournament will resume tomorrow morning for the second of three rounds.
